I developed the software which was used to solve the problem of catching up with the first interstellar object to be discovered, 1I/'Oumuamua, Project Lyra. I am a researcher for the Initiative for Interstellar Studies (i4is).

there may be someone out there who can
30.07.2025 22:47 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0just that. However to brush this paper aside as irrelevant, as certain parties seem to be doing, especially those who do not have the expertise to pronounce on it in this way, is a big shame.
30.07.2025 22:47 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I say that we should leave it to NASA to decide, I have made that quite clear all along. Why are papers published? It is to open up a scientific line of enquiry to the entire science community. Where different perspectives can add to the debate. I welcome this conversation Chris because it does
30.07.2025 22:47 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0Tod thanks for the apology.
30.07.2025 22:02 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Chris, I'm saying that the astrodynamics need to be conducted before anyone, ANYONE can decide whether Juno can actually do this mission. We present the case in the paper and its certainly not within your or my remit to make inferences about whether this can be done or not.
30.07.2025 22:00 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0Thus the authors have done their job in getting the paper out asap. to write-off this paper in this manner is, FWIW a rather underhand and obstructive act as far as you are concerned, please give me your credentials for speaking on behalf of the NASA experts.
30.07.2025 21:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0FWIW Chris, the value in this for an astrodynamicist is to discover what it would take to achieve an intercept, it is up to the key engineers for Juno to decide whether this is practicable. You will observe that the timing of the required DeltaV is not that far in the future.
30.07.2025 21:46 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yep you are right, we are aware of the status of Juno (also with an inoperative main engine), but we were encouraged by the NASA personnel to proceed with the paper since any case to extend the Juno mission beyond its current expiry works in their favour. There is plenty of life left in Juno.

The optimal direct intercept launch date has elapsed (2024 July 19th launch), but an indirect route, using some combination of gravity assists, might be able to get there. Just looking into this.

Could the 'Dark Comet' 1998 KY26, which will be intercepted by the JAXA Hayabusa2 mission in 2031, actually be a relic of the USSR space program (a Venera mission)? I think so and I am working on it.

So for this reason I never judge people who aren't able to do work; you see that's something I have personally experienced first hand and I have to say, it's a bit of a nigthmare to have to live through.

23.02.2025 22:24 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Do not however make the grave mistake of taking the shortcut and purchasing a bottle of Lloyd Grossman's 'Putanesca' sauce, besides reducing you to trying most desperately and inadequately to duplicate Lloyd Grossman's....
23.02.2025 22:24 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Anyway, enough of this triviality. Not quite. I made a 'Spaghetti Putanesca' for lunch, a dish I heartily recommend to you as being quite delicious yet very simple to prepare.
23.02.2025 22:24 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0 I mentioned that I fondly remembered a theatre critic's review of Charlton Heston's acting in the play 'A man for all seasons':
'The most moving part of his performance was his toupรฉ'
Well the 'sh*t is hitting the fan' with asteroid designated 2024 YR4 and people should now be receiving a serious reality-check because if we don't start acting NOW, and this thing hits the Earth and wipes out millions as it may do without any forward planning, people are going to be annoyed.
20.02.2025 09:32 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0... without ever thinking about what humanity's near-term and long-term future might look like, and treating anyone who does as though they are in cloud-cuckoo land and as some kind of a joke.
20.02.2025 09:32 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I've notice that people - in stark contrast to my own attitude - generally don't care about our place in the Universe, they tend to get on with their lives and what I believe to be trivialities (although admittedly ones providing a steady income) ...
20.02.2025 09:32 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0For example, I once presented a while ago where my fellow speaker totally roasted and mocked the entire space industy. Whether he genuinely felt this way or realised the importance of it in terms of our long term existence and had his tongue firmly in his cheak I'm not sure.
20.02.2025 09:32 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I notice almost a look of total distain sometimes from people when I bring up the subject, their eyes gloss over as though things in space are by definition unimportant and irrelevant.
20.02.2025 09:32 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0There seems to be a strange apathy about this, possibly the MSM have made such a hooha about previous 'apocalyptic meteors on a collision course with Earth' that the world's population have become quite disinterested in the subject, a kind of 'cry wolf' scenario is happening.
