#OTD in 1942 the KV-1S prototype completed mobility trials on pavement and country roads, moving on to off-road trials. The tank already showed a considerably higher speed and reliability than the overweight KV-1. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

A change was introduced into the design of the T-70 light tank #OTD in 1942. The exhaust pipes were moved from the side of the tank to the top of the engine deck. Heat shielding was later introduced to prevent tank riders from burning themselves on it. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The one-man turret of the T-70 was one of its biggest weaknesses. #OTD in 1942 a model of a two-man turret with a 45 mm gun was tested. This was the first step towards building the T-80 tank. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The design for an upgraded M6A2 tank was submitted #OTD in 1944. Laden with a new turret, 105 mm gun, and extra 100 mm of armour, the weight of the tank would increase to 77 tons. Due to the extreme weight, the additional armour was never installed. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1944 the 501st Heavy Tank Battalion as hurriedly sent towards the Vistula to deal with a Soviet breakthrough. Their new King Tiger tanks were incredibly unreliable and only 8 reached SzydΕ‚Γ³w to fight the Red Army there. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Eventually. Very few were built since by that point that class of vehicle was no longer in vogue.

The round was intended for a new light carbine, which was being developed in parallel. Simonov's SKS won the tender in 1944, but only pilot batches reached the front lines before the end of the war. #guns #history #WW2 #WWII

The Red Army identified 300 meters as critical range in a firefight. This range was too far for a pistol or SMG, but a rifle was excessively powerful. #OTD in 1943 the Red Army composed requirements for an intermediate 7.62 mm round optimized for this range. #guns #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1941 the trials commission studying a curious SPG on the chassis of a ZIS-5 truck called Project 423 finished its report. The vehicle was too light for a 76 mm gun and the unarmoured vehicle proved a tempting target. #artillery #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1945 a number of changes were introduced into the design of the SU-101 tank destroyer chiefly to deal with insufficient cooling of the driver's compartment. It was too late to save the design, since the army wanted an SPG on the T-54 chassis. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Trials of the SU-85B began #OTD in 1945. This vehicle had a 85 mm V-13 gun which was lighter than its predecessors. It passed trials, but never entered production, as GAZ was switching over to peacetime production and refused to start new military projects. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The design of the Grille 17/21 SPG was finished #OTD in 1944. Work on assembling a prototype of this 60 ton vehicle armed with either a 17 cm Kanone 18 or 21 cm Mrs 18 began later that year, but never completed. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The 21st Army Tank Brigade was the first unit to use Valentine tanks. It received these tanks starting #OTD in 1940 and thanks to the rapid production of the tank it was fully equipped by mid-September. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The Challenger I tank first saw battle #OTD in 1944. The small number and poor reliability of these vehicles meant that they had little effect on the fighting in Normandy compared to the Firefly that combined the same gun with a more effective chassis. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1943 the USSR was informed that two GMC M10 tank destroyers were on the way for trials. The trials were delayed considerably, as no 76 mm ammunition was sent along with them. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The VK 30.02 (M) was officially chosen as the chassis for a new tank destroyer confusingly called schweren PanzerjΓ€ger (Pz.Sfl.IVd) (8.8 cm L/71) #OTD in 1942. This vehicle is better known as the Jagdpanther. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Photo of the Assault Tank T14 taken #OTD in 1943. The idea to create a heavily armoured tank based on existing components was sound, but the implementation left much to be desired. Only two prototypes were built, one of which was sent to the UK. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Malyshev signed an order to begin trials of the tank #OTD in 1943. Despite the rush, it was too late. The army wanted a tank with thicker armour and a larger gun to defeat new German tanks and tank destroyers discovered at Kursk. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The T-43 tank entered trials #OTD in 1943. The tank was recommended to be accepted into service, but it was a year too late to the party. The Red Army wanted a medium tank with an 85 mm gun and 90 mm of front armour. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Soviet armour and artillery branches were often at odds. The GBTU opposed putting a larger gun on the SU-76M, but the Artillery Committee insisted. #OTD in 1944 the GBTU gave up and approved the trials of the SU-85A. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Germany put the M42 Stahlhelm into production #OTD in 1942 when it became clear that the war would not end any time soon. The design was similar to the M40, but the manufacturing process was simplified and the helmet was made out of cheaper steel to cut costs. #history #WW2 #WWII

Drones as we know them today would not be invented for many decades. There were some remote controlled AFVs but they were deployed in small numbers and did not have an appreciable effect on the course of the war.

#OTD in 1938 an order was given to make good use of the Red Army's many obsolete tanks by digging them in as static emplacements. The tanks would be equipped with either 45 mm cannons or machine gun ports. Many were not yet installed by the start of #WW2. #tanks #history #WWII
