Not all of us were raised in the Christian tradition. I had a secular upbringing. Outside of weddings and funerals, I've been to church services about 10 times in my life. From the outside looking in, it's all adult make believe with a heavy dose of social reinforcement.

These are simple, observable effects of us living on a spherical planet. There are a lot more, such as air currents, that can be seen as well.

I come at this from the perspective of someone with a meteorology background. Frankly, if the earth was flat, our deterministic weather models wouldn't work at all. The Coriolis effect, which causes pressure systems to rotate, wouldn't be a thing, resulting in storms that didn't rotate.

Don't forget, Jewish people are no more special than any other people with shared ethnicity and nationality.

Today I'm reading an obituary with pleasure.

And I keep writing Jennifer Lawrence asking for a date. I wonder which is more likely.

I want someone to ask him whether it's better for a devout Christian to help feed people in whatever way they can provide food, or for those people to suffer through starvation so they can "be closer to Jesus".

I suspect I know the answer, but I want to hear him say it.

I've become convinced that the conservative Christians would rather cause people to suffer, because it "brings them closer to Jesus" or some shit like that.

Either that, or it's a "the beatings will continue until you agree with Republicans" type of thing.

The question nobody is asking Republicans is the most simple: How is this shutdown making life better for most Americans?

I look at people who tell me who's to blame for a problem, instead of fixing it, as children or people of low moral character.

I'm convinced that the thinking among conservative Christians is that suffering is better than eating, and they're going to use the levers of government to prove it, one way or another.

If I was to accept your definition, I would insist on replacing the word "prove" with the word "demonstrate." Only in mathematics do they have proofs; their god should be demonstrable.

I don't pay it any mind at all. If they want to indulge in adult make believe, especially if it's to assuage some guilt or shame, then that's on them. It doesn't reinforce anything for me, though, because I don't give any consideration to the idea that "heaven" is a real place.

Or they could be fully supplied, and those boats weren't running drugs at all. Without interdiction and due process, we'll never know.

To understand America, you have to know two things:

The first American colonists were religious nutbags that had been kicked out of two European countries.

The national anthem is a racist war poem penned by a slave-owner defending lawyer, set to an old English drinking song.

Treat the ideas as bad, and the people who hold them as victims of those bad ideas.

BTW, I agree that Israel should be able to be criticized without accusations of antisemitism being thrown around.

As a fellow atheist, I wish we could get out of the habit of claiming to be better Christians than some Christians, as I don't see Christianity as a valid bar against which we should measure morality. Let them wallow in their ideas, while we go off and be better humans overall.

As an atheist, I agree with the point you're making. The Bible should be looked at as mythology, which provides history, tradition, and connection for people through the years.

I further agree that atheists spend too much time debunking Christianity as though that's the last word on any religion.

Your article insists prayer is done kind of connection to a god (the Christian one) in which we atheists hold no belief, so of course we think it's a waste of time.

If you get something out of it, good for you. But your incessant need for others to get something out of it as well is kinda creepy.

I think secular is a better description.

Someone needs to ask him if, as a man of the Christian faith, whether he thinks it is better for people to suffer, than it is for them to get the things they need in order to survive and thrive?
