The thing that stands out here is so many Dems run campaigns terrified of (and thus buying into) the Fox News framing.

Mamdani is rightly mocking that framing as ridiculous and it resonates. He's not running scared. He's running proud of who he is and what he stands for.

Good morning! I'm in Uganda to visit family and friends.

But depending on your perspective, don't worry or I'm sorry: I'll be back by the end of the month.

See you soon, NYC.

Fewer barriers to entry re publishing, I mean!

So my theory is that Brooks never reads young writers and he overlooks novels by women unless they’re already very well established

Kaitlyn Greenidge’s We Love You Charlie Freeman is something I recommend regularly. It is audacious, the villains are as villainous as they get, and good lord, she’s an astonishing writer.

Secondly it seems like he doesn’t read much contemporary literary fiction, especially by younger writers, if he thinks the villains aren’t bad enough and the writing not transgressive enough. May I recommend Ottessa Moshfegh? Tony Tulathimutte? (Rejection would blow his mind.)

It is difficult to get a book published but it was much much harder when Norman Mailer was on the best seller list than it is nowβ€”especially if you weren’t a white guy with connections or credentials

This is great and among other things, Brooks’ argument hinges on the fact that the Times bestseller list is dominated by genre and popular mass market stuff. All that means is that reading has become more accessible and there are fewer barriers to entry

While progressives often get accused of undermining the Democratic Party, the evidence shows that it’s the moderate wing that most often violates the β€œVote Blue No Matter Who” principle.

And of course there will be some doofy right winger who will be like but can a woman lift x amount in a combat situation? And I think the reply should be can a man fit through a tiny space with a (scientifically proven) higher pain tolerance?

There is no way to stop men from being misogynistic that doesn’t involve them viewing women as equals and that means viewing them as peers. In every setting.

It’s not formal. It’s pushing boys toward trucks and boy things and girls toward dolls. Or conditioning them to think pink = girl or blue = boy
