Last week, I got to defend my dissertation on firearm violence in Europe, after working on it for four(ish) years.
Very thankful for the engaging questions of my defence committee (including @jkivivuori.bsky.social @joakimsturup.bsky.social) and support of my promotors!
Huge turnout at the anti budget cut demonstrations in the Hague. The cuts are shortsighted, disenfranchise students, stiffle innovation, hurt young scholars, create talent loss, undercut future growth.
WHO really wants this? #DoeHetNiet
Unhappy faces w @natalihelberger.bsky.social

But not to worry: you will still see the odd posts about firearms and violence, open science and teaching as well ๐
13.11.2024 21:37 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0New job alert ๐จ
As of this month, I started as a postdoctoral researcher at the Erasmus University Rotterdam!
In the upcoming years, my research will focus mostly on police-youth interactions and inequalities in the criminal justice system.

The empirical parts of my dissertation are all available open access, in the form of articles.

After four years of doing research on gun violence in Europe, the only thing left to do is to defend my dissertation! ๐
21 November, 1pm (Amsterdam time)
To anyone interested: the defense is public and everyone can attend. There is also a livestream! โฌ๏ธ

We discussed the activities from last year and possibilities for next year. In short: if you want to contribute to the website, the organisation in general or be a contactperson on open science in your area, let the co-chairs know!
I am sure that the detailed minutes will be shared shortly ๐
First business at the #ESC / #Eurocrim: attending the meeting of the European Network for Open Criminology #ENOC!
Loads of interesting panels related to #openscience this year ๐
I've set up a starter pack of people who post to Bluesky about crime analysis and crime prevention. See the list and all their posts at: go.bsky.app/Eq5g8c5

08.12.2023 09:54 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0To fully understand firearm violence as a broader phenomenon that goes beyond firearm homicides, systematic and reliable registration of detailed data on non-lethal forms of firearm violence is an absolute necessity.
08.12.2023 09:54 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Focusing too much on firearm homicide carries the risk of not recognising trends in non-lethal forms of firearm violence and to wrongly evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives that combat firearm violence which are often evaluated based on their effects on firearm homicides
08.12.2023 09:53 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0In a new research report for Project Insight, I argue that we rely too much on firearm homicide in research, law enforcement & policy making. Instead, we should regard firearm violence as a continuum, in which the majority of firearm violence remains non-lethal.

Setting up a new course is so much fun, especially when I get to decide that it is absolute necessary for the students to talk 3 hours about firearms and drugs.
Gotta love working in criminology!
My first post here is to remind you about the upcoming webinar on Data Sharing in Criminology (29 Nov), organised by the newly established European Network for Open Criminology. Sign up below! www.eventbrite.es/e/webinar-da...

The first complete (but not final) version of my PhD. (Title not definite).
Now itโs time to cry a little (out of joy and exhaustion) and sleep a lot (or at least until tomorrow when the new teaching block starts).
Hi there! My name is Katharina Krรผsselmann & I am currently finalizing my PhD on firearm violence in Europe.
Here, I will mostly post about (firearm) violence, explosives, open science, criminology, PhD life and you may spot a pic of my dog here and there.
