Last week, I got to defend my dissertation on firearm violence in Europe, after working on it for four(ish) years.

Very thankful for the engaging questions of my defence committee (including @jkivivuori.bsky.social @joakimsturup.bsky.social) and support of my promotors!

Huge turnout at the anti budget cut demonstrations in the Hague. The cuts are shortsighted, disenfranchise students, stiffle innovation, hurt young scholars, create talent loss, undercut future growth.

To fully understand firearm violence as a broader phenomenon that goes beyond firearm homicides, systematic and reliable registration of detailed data on non-lethal forms of firearm violence is an absolute necessity.

Focusing too much on firearm homicide carries the risk of not recognising trends in non-lethal forms of firearm violence and to wrongly evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives that combat firearm violence which are often evaluated based on their effects on firearm homicides

In a new research report for Project Insight, I argue that we rely too much on firearm homicide in research, law enforcement & policy making. Instead, we should regard firearm violence as a continuum, in which the majority of firearm violence remains non-lethal.
