The 1990s brought Asians to Italy, which strengthened numbers and standards of cricket. In 1993, Italy brought in New Zealand great Martin Crowe as coach for a brief period. Simone Gambino had met Crowe at the 1992 World Cup and invited him to Rome. Italy had become an ICC Affiliate team in 1984, and in 1995, became the first affiliate to gain Associate status. Italy participated in the first European Championship in 1996 in Denmark and also played in the 1997 ICC Trophy.
