Is the energy transition faster than expected and still so slow that emissions on a global level keep increasing? Or has the transition now reached the level of at least taking on all new demand globally?

Maybe Chapter 11 in The Shock of the Anthropocene by Fressoz and Bonneuil could be of interest? I think it mostly describes Europe.

JB Fressoz often us Drax as an illustration of how wood burning has done a comeback in the UK.

So the "green transition" is not much of a transition and neither is it green.

The "energy transition" isn't working that great with expanding demand... then it is just an addition.

A Green ‘Transition’? If Only It Were That Simple In ‘More and More and More,’ Jean-Baptiste Fressoz shows that the human history of energy is one of accumulation, not substitution.

Great @drilledmedia.bsky.social episode with historian Fressoz drilling into the energy transition narrative. He also talks about the IPCC and CCS used by actors as the US government to protect a growth agenda and fossil companies profits. Check it out!

That half is still a lot. And so cutting beef to zero is equal to taking all cars of the road. In the end it isnt about the one or the other. It is both. Maybe one more possible and more prioritised at points and times. Agriculture beeing a huge factor beyond GHG.

China is the worlds biggest importer of soya, producer and consumer of pork.

How can China be regarded a non-developed country while building advanced drones and luxury cars. Is half the country poor hiding extreme wealth behind per capita averages?

How is Guangdong doing compared to Xinjiang?

A lot of this seems resonable regarding Africa I guess. But.

Semi-perifery? China is the biggest producer of cars, coal (4th in gas, 5th in oil) and CO2-emissions (also consumption based). Biggest oil and coal importer. With the second largest military spending of all countries.

China is central.

Nuclear power and 'energy transition': a technopolitical story Nearly fifty years after the Messmer Plan (March 1974), France is committed to revitalizing its nuclear power industry in 2022-2023, with the planned construction of three pairs of EPR2 reactors, as well as substantial investment in the development of more exploratory technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMR). While successive crises (health, geopolitical, energy...) have played a major role, it is above all the growing urgency of climate change, expressed by public authorities in the need for an 'energy transition', that is presented as justifying increased recourse to nuclear power. But what role can nuclear power play in the various 'transition' scenarios envisaged? Are the conditions right for the massive deployment of new nuclear infrastructures? Is the very idea of 'energy transition' a realistic hypothesis? These questions invite us to revisit the links between the idea of energy transition and the history of civil nuclear power, a history that embraces and associates dimensions and players that are just as scientific, technical and political. To shed light on the choices (or non-choices) relating to nuclear power and the energy transition, it was necessary to bring together the worlds of academia, industry and politics, represented here by Jean-Baptiste Fressoz, Olivier Bard and Raphael Schellenberger. Three main themes are addressed in this debate: (1) the genealogy of the idea of energy transition, its meaning and its application in the industrial and political worlds; (2) the echoes (and differences) between the situation in 2023-2024 and that, inescapable for French nuclear power, of the period preceding the launch of the Messmer plan in 1973-1974; (3) the modalities of 'long-term government' and the possible forms of coupling between technology and politics called for by both the nuclear revival and 'energy transition' projects

Maybe this article on the history and politics of French nuclear power, cowritten by Fressoz, would be of interest to you.

Thanks! Interesting read on French nuclear. Who is Alex Chalmers? Did you read any of Fressoz articles on nuclear?

In Sweden we have political support for nuclear. The right wing + fascist party try in vain to get companies to do it. Very expensive electricity it seems and havent been popular.

I agree reading Fressoz have helped me diffentiate real progress from spin.

It was months since I read the book. Does he write about an inevitability of a collapse? I listened to many interviews and he never talks about a collapse. What he do say is that 2050 total decarbonisation isn't possible.

Don't you think he describes regionally shifting industrialization and at specific historical times? And how do you draw conclusions about an "eternal fate"?

I see your point about Jacobin being political. I agree there are political aspects. You drew a lot upon one sentence on the last page!

No he isn't a big fan of nuclear that is true, but he isn't categoricaly against it. By talking-points you mean he is only repeating anti-nuclear propaganda but he doesn't have a grounded opinion in facts?

Is he wrong about linking the ideology of "energy transition" to nuclear based futurology?

Do you really think this review is a good source to understand how Fressoz work contributes to or detracts from climate justice?

Is Fressoz part of the New Left? Did you read any of Fressoz books on the environmental implications on the development of industries or his critique of the Anthropocene? Why do you think he is hypostatizing modern techology to all societies when his books describe different historical processes?
