"Early warning systems do seem to work. Workers who reported recalling getting a heat alert had a lower probability of reducing their working hours and a lower probability of experiencing heat related health effects."

Our "Recently collected evidence suggests that UK workers do feel that their health is being harmed by heat, & many are reducing their working & and effort to help deal with the heat."
Read our (w/ @profejzrobinson.bsky.social) @lsepoliticsblog.bsky.social blog on protecting UK workers from heat.
This chapter specifically includes labour and just transitions.

Adaptation including #EWS are partially effective in protecting workers from heat but still insufficient.
Clear scope for government interventions: max temperature regulation & better targeted EWS

Regulations such as maximum working temperature thresholds, better early warning systems, and employer investment in workforce resilience are urgent!

A climate change induced tragedy. A 47-year-old construction worker died in Emilia-Romagna due to high heat. Construction workers are amongst the most vulnerable to heat stress.
We need proactive labour protection policies. Protecting workers from heat is protecting human rights.

Stronger labour protections policies are required. Worker empowerment is key to better protect worker health, incomes, profits, & inclusive growth.
We will be co-creating recommendations for stronger worker protection actions.

Stronger labour protections policies are required.
Worker empowerment is key along with...
Maximum working temperature thresholds, better early warning systems & employer investment in resilience.
Protecting workers from heat is protecting human rights.

Impacts are unequal.
Older/younger workers, those with health conditions, in high-exposure sectors (construction, agriculture), or doing physical jobs are more vulnerable.
Hourly/commission workers often face a choice: risk health or lose pay.
Workers without regular contracts are not empowered
Early warnings reduced negative impacts of heat stress partially.
Advanced alerts reduced the probability of workers reporting adverse health effects du e to high heat by ~5 percentage-points
Employer actions - cooling & hydration access improved productivity and lessened health effects.

#Climatechange is already affecting occupational health & safety.
More than 2.4 billion workers are exposed to excessive heat at work annually.
Time for proactive labour protection measures everywhere.
