As rich as the literature on party decline is, it has mostly been predicated on party politics in Western Europe and the US. By engaging Wang Hui's theory and his critics, I try to demonstrate the merits and limits of addressing the crisis of parties with a Maoist answer.

I wrote about how Wang Hui's theory of depoliticization and debates about this idea help theorists of the political party understand the relationship between the charismatic leader, mass movements, and possibilities of party renewal. Now Online First and Open Access at APSR.

The grassroots radicalism during the Cultural Revolution session in my China course is always a lot of fun to teach.

3/3 Till today I think of it as an urgently needed course for any grad student in polisci, across subfields. It also made it very clear to me that teaching history can powerfully demonstrate the limits of the present, something that deeply shaped my own way of teaching.

2/3 It covered topics such as the rise of behavioralism, the changing contexts of social science research in the postwar context, the biases and contradictions emerging out of competing methods, the possible futures of polisci, etc.

1/3 Someone's complaints about Intro to PoliSci being taught in a hard "scientific" way reminded me of my Intro in grad school, which is still among the best courses I've ever taken. It was taught by Bill Scheuerman and, notably, involved a section of disciplinary history.

I do think it leading to folks sharing harsh reviews is a pleasant outcome.
