Cuts to the Arts and Humanities have been going on for years in the UK. Several great departments were closed down. But in most places, the erosion was more gradual. /1

We need new legislation to prevent any future Government deregulating them again!

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

Amongst everything else that's going on in UK universities, this hasn't had as much coverage as it might have done in other years. In many institutions, it'll lead to changes in how undergraduates are taught, too.
