a plate of plain pan fried radish cakes in the center! a small bowl of peanut-based dipping sauce sits next to it, and partially off frame is a plate of stir fried green beans and a platter of mushroom and napa stir fry.

OMG lol forgot the most important step - EAT IT! Momma Ko says let it rest for 1-2 hours before slicing unless you want REGRET. must pan fry before eating for the crispy! (we usually dip it in a cilantro/soy sauce/rice vinegar/garlic sauce OR sweet chili sauce) ok bye HAPPY HOLIDAYS

omg a real Christmas miracle!!! you're telling me she didn't go immediately choose the box it came in instead? HAHA

lolol yessss! turns out the vegetarian one my mom likes to make is pretty simple!

a 3 tiered steamer pot is steaming on the stove! Esther's mom's right hand is repositioning the basket with the radish mixture. the lid is held open with a dish towel.

step 9: HOME STRETCH stack the steamer basket with the second portion of radish cake you secretly prepared into the steaming pot tiers that you also secretly already boiled water in!!! throw 35(ish) mins on a timer and frolic away before you get roped into fixing the wifi for the 9875628395th time!

step 8: aggresively smash the radish-flour creation into the prepared steamer basket! attempt to smooth it, then give up. leave room because "it will get taller when it grows up" if i literally translate what the Taiwanese mother is cautioning. encourage it to grow deliciously!

step 7: attempt to gracefully pour the now softened white radish (water first, mix, then the radish!) into your mysterious rice potion! get shoved out of the way by exasperated Taiwanese mother because you're taking too long. mix the radish potion thoroughly!

rice flour from the previous step is now mixed to a porridge-like consistency! it's now on the stove top being warmed. the wooden spoon used to stir it is sitting in the pot.

step 6: continuously stir the rice potion over low heat until it is a cozy warm! get distracted by your cat, then accidentally let the bottom get too gooey due to distraction, then betray the metal whisk in hopes the prized wooden spoon will help you fix your mistake...

step 5: rush to whisk the abandoned vat of rice flour, adding some vague amount of water! toss some salt and pepper in at the bidding of the wise Taiwanese mother! apologize to her for questioning the black pepper while simultaneously making sure you whisked it SMOOTH

yes!!! she said the holes are too big so in her experience too much leaks through once you get to the steaming stage 🫣

step 4: unceremoniously plop shredded luo bo into an also ancient pot with some water and a pinch of mystical powder! (salt) respectfully give it some privacy! (cover with lid) cook on low-med heat just until softened (maybe 10-12 minutes... ish)

step 3: shred one magnificently plump bai luo bo (daikon/white radish)! admire the food processor efficiency! wonder if you should buy one of your own instead of stubbornly and poorly shredding everything by hand all the time!

step one: regretfully pin a too-small cotton cloth (NOT a cheese cloth, warns Momma Ko) over an ancient steamer basket (must be ancient, says me)
