I’ve always seen so much shame and resentment about the skill of “writing well,” both in my students and out in the world. There’s such a sense of glee that all of those teachers who told them that learning how to write was necessary were wrong.

Just like any form of art or entertainment, those threatened by that degree of social capital will always try to shut it down, because trust me, they know this better than anyone.

Humor is powerful, and if you want to know where the culture of a society currently stands, look around to see who and what makes them laugh.

When I taught university rhetoric I’d tell my students humor is one of the most potent forms of persuasion. If someone’s joke makes you laugh, it is a small admission that you relate to some portion of their POV. What’s more, most people struggle to dislike someone who makes them laugh.
