Our body is a mosaic of fungi. Some scientists think they could be influencing our brain The fungi within our bodies may have a much greater effect on our health than we've long given them credit for.

The ocean is changing colors, researchers say. Here's what it means. Warming waters are causing the colors of the ocean to change -- a trend that could impact humans if it were to continue, according to new research.

Yes, but we keep going right? Because what’s the alternative?

I often echo this sentiment. The Earth will go on (microbes will be content), but we might not be here. We NEED a healthy ocean.

Despite all of this. I remain hopeful. Especially through the eyes of students aspiring scientists.

We are integrating more science based solutions into conservation, restoration, AND decision/policy making.

If you know a coral reef scientist, give them a big hug (and contact info for a good therapist). Not gonna lie. It is becoming increasingly difficult to monitor your study sites as they die y’all 😒

Ah Papahanaumokuakea. I had the honor to conduct my dissertation research there. An absolutely magical place! The corals were beautiful of course but it also made me truly appreciate the majestic albatross.

Yes. Especially deep sea corals that are very slow growing. Although I don’t think we have a good understanding of the effects on soft bottom habitats where we could really be disturbing microbial populations, and biogeochemical processes.

As a grad student, I remember hearing stories from professors about the (negative) changes they observed on coral reefs over their careers. I didn’t expect to see such drastic changes within a much shorter time span (5 yrs) at our study site in Honduras due to disease and bleaching.

Most predatory fish are gone. Some of the earliest work on this was done by Daniel Pauly at UBC leading to the β€˜fishing down the food web’ notion. #oceanchat

If you want to know about the history of fishing, read The Unnatural History of the Sea by Dr. Callum Roberts

Published in the mid 2000s, so probably needs some updating, but it's very good!

Some of the talking points on fishing 400 years ago were probably pulled from that book

According to the film, governments spend $20 billion per year subsidizing overfishing

All ocean conservation efforts get about $1.2 billion

Show me your budget and I'll tell you your values

It's no surprise the ocean is in trouble
