"So the tariff is paid in this country by the importer, is that right?" -- Eugene Robinson guides Scott Bessent into acknowledging that tariffs are in fact paid in the United States, not by foreign governments

They can get a lot bigger than that if you miss one. The size you have is good for stuffing. Much bigger and they head to the compost heap in our house.

Unfortunately, Donald Trump doesn't give a damn about the Constitution. And way too many people seem unwilling (or brave enough?) to flaunt him.

EVs are a great way to go for many people. My Hyundai Ioniq5 has a range of about 350 miles summer, 250 winter. Usually charge at home. Long trips take some planning, but new fast chargers keep appearing, and you can now get adapters for Tesla charging stations...

Renewables generated 47% of Australia's electricity in October 2024, with solar generating 25.4% and wind 14.8%.

So, its goal of 82% RE electricity by 2030 is doable

It is accelerating wind, solar and battery storage by adding another 40 GW by 2030 to achieve its goal.

Why is it that Haberman and other journalists at the Times can't tell us when Trump is lying because "nobody knows what's in his mind" or whatever excuse they always give but they can tell us when they think he believes his own bullshit?

Two graphs from the paper.

The left graph shows US net greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 to 2022. The official EPA estimates decline fairly steadily from 6.6 gigatonnes per year in 2005 to 5.5 in 2022 (17% below 2005 levels), largely reflecting natural gas displacing coal for electricity generation. The adjusted estimates, which reflect independent measurements of methane emissions from oil and gas infrastructure, end at 6.3 gigatonnes per year in 2022 (only 5% below 2005 levels).

The right graph shows 2022 emissions increasing linearly with the assumed global warming potential of methane. Climate scientists are divided on whether to use the 100-year GWP, 20-year GWP, or something in between. With methane warming impacts assessed via the 20-year GWP, the central 2022 emissions estimate is 7.9 gigatonnes per year - 20% *above* the EPA's official 2005 estimate.

Caption: Figure 1: Left: United States net greenhouse gas emissions over time. Right: Scaling of 2022 net emissions with methane’s GWP. After adjustment to reflect recent measurements of methane emissions from natural gas infrastructure, United States net emissions remain nearly as high as their 2005 level.

New paper. I wish this wasn't the case, but most progress on reducing US greenhouse gas emissions is likely spurious. Why? EPA underestimates methane emissions from oil and gas. Relevant today as Repubs vote to gut IRA's methane monitoring/mitigation program. 🧡

This is really unconscionable. Trump admin also appears to be decommisioning NOAA satellites. These instruments provide critical data. Do we really want to rely on EU and other countries for all the environmental data NASA and NOAA instruments are collecting?

The only way to force Republicans to re-evaluate their rule-breaking is for blue states to break some rules themselves and end the double-standard. We can’t keep fighting with one hand tied behind our back.
