Take-home: LLMs can give parents useful, understandable general info on childhood asthma.
But: they’re a complement, not a replacement for healthcare professionals.
🤝 AI + clinicians = better support for families.
📊 Results:
• Most answers rated good to very good (median 4/5 accuracy)
• Parents found them clear & accessible
• Paid versions generally outperformed free ones
🔎 Methods:
• 117 real questions from parents → grouped into 10 key themes
• Asked to 10 LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot…)
• LLMs answers rated by 5 pediatric pulmonologist (accuracy, appropiateness) & 100 parents (appropriateness, comprehensibility)
How good are ChatGPT & other large language models at answering parents’ questions about childhood asthma? (Eur Resp J 2025)
👉 New study from my team at Necker Hospital (Paris) finds their answers are mostly medically accurate and easy to understand.

The firing of the CDC’s director and subsequent resignations of CDC officials will have a direct impact on children’s health. AAP will continue to serve as a trusted partner for pediatricians and parents, sharing scientific recommendations that put the health and wellbeing of children first.

The unjustified removal of the CDC director & sidelining of experts in favor of non-specialists is unprecedented. (1/3)

🏆 Conclusion: WAAPs starting with 2-4 puffs of salbutamol, to be repeated if necessary, would be more in line with how families actually manage symptoms while remaining effective in most situations. #Asthma #PediatricPulmonology
01.04.2025 09:00 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0📈 We found WAAPs prescribing 2-4 puffs were more likely to be followed than those recommending 5-10 puffs. This suggests lower-dose recommendations may better align with families' actual practices.
01.04.2025 09:00 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0✅ Despite lower doses than prescribed, 74% of episodes resolved without further intervention, and parents reported symptom improvement in 96% of cases.
01.04.2025 09:00 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0🧐 While all families had WAAPs, most didn't follow them precisely. 49% used LESS salbutamol than prescribed, only 9% used more, and 42% used similar amounts to recommendations.
01.04.2025 09:00 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0📊 Key finding: Most parents use just 2-4 puffs in the first 2 hours after symptoms begin (median of 3 puffs), varying by symptom type. Much less than the 10+ puffs some guidelines (especially French ones) recommend! 😮
01.04.2025 09:00 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0🤔 Our rationale: Guidelines for salbutamol dosing vary widely, but we lack real-world data on how families actually administer it. We used smart inhalers 📱 to track ACTUAL usage patterns rather than relying on recall.
