For Halloween, Dickinson Matches Poe | Better Living through Beowulf Emily Dickinson matches Poe in gothic horror and is worth reading on Halloween.

For Halloween, check out the poems by Emily Dickinson. Sheโ€™s even scarier than Poe betterlivingthroughbeowulf.com/for-hallowee...

ICE Agents and Falstaffโ€™s Army | Better Living through Beowulf ICE recruitment is, in many ways, proving a disaster, bringing to mind Falstaffโ€™s recruiting methods in โ€œHenry IV, Part II."

ICEโ€™s boondogglesโ€”an inept and badly trained forceโ€”suggest that Shakespeareโ€™s Falstaff must be in charge of recruitment betterlivingthroughbeowulf.com/ice-agents-a...

Imploding Edifices, in D.C. and in Lit | Better Living through Beowulf Trump demolishing the East Wing of the White House brings to mind various imploding edifices in lit: โ€œOne Hundred Years of Solitude,โ€ โ€œFall of the House of Usher,โ€ and โ€œPrincess and Curdie."

The East Wing demolition got me thinking of literary collapses: House of Usher, the Buendia house in 100 Years of Solitude, and the whole kingdom in MacDonaldโ€™s Princess and Curdie. Similar symbolism at work as the White House destruction. Others? betterlivingthroughbeowulf.com/imploding-ed...

Trumpโ€™s Anarchy vs. No Kings Rallies | Better Living through Beowulf Shelleyโ€™s โ€œMasque of Anarchyโ€ describes Trumpismโ€™s anarchy but also shows a powerful way to respond.

Shelleyโ€™s โ€œMask of Anarchyโ€ essentially calls for No Kings rallies to counter Trumpian anarchy. The poem inspired Gandhi and King and can now inspire us betterlivingthroughbeowulf.com/trumps-anarc...

A Browning Poem and MAGA America | Better Living through Beowulf Browning's poem "Andrea del Sarto" is about an artist who settles for mediocrity over greatness--which is what the U.S is doing at the moment.

I donโ€™t think a long book is even primarily about plot, or character, or any of the patterned information on its pages. A long book is practicing over time a way of being in the world. Reading even a very good summary is not the same as giving over some portion of your own life to that practice.

Oct. 18: Arise, Now, Arise | Better Living through Beowulf White House advisor and resident fascist Stephen Miller has been playing Wormtongue to old and demented Trump.

If we see Miller as a Wormtongue pouring poison into a demented ruler's ear, we can also think of America as Thรฉoden rising from his torpor and calling upon his troops to assemble--say, this coming Saturday for the No King's Day marches betterlivingthroughbeowulf.com/oct-18-arise...
