CJR was dogged in its pursuit of my story. Because of what I do and who I am, I felt that I had to answer their questions honestly.

After fatal police shootings in Illinois, investigating agencies are required to publicly release a report if no charges are brought against the officers.
Three large counties fail to meet this requirement: Will, Madison, and St. Clair.

NEW: The words “excited delirium” came up multiple times during the trial over the in-custody death of an Indianapolis man having a mental health emergency. But experts say it’s a rejected medical diagnosis used by police to justify excessive force.

NEW w/ @farrahsoa.bsky.social: Sean Grayson, charged with murdering Sonya Massey, committed misconduct at prior jobs that could have stopped him from being rehired.
In one case, drug charges were just dropped—after the defendant, Chelsey Lowe, was already convicted. ipmnewsroom.org/sean-grayson...
NEW from @samstecklow.bsky.social, @farrahsoa.bsky.social & Dean Olsen: In 2021, while working for Kincaid PD, Sean Grayson pulled over Kyle Adkins, saying there was a warrant for his arrest. Our investigation reveals that the warrant never existed.

NEW: In 2023, Rantoul, IL had its first 2 fatal police shootings in its history — both of young Black men. A review cleared officers, but recommended more training.
Instead, RPD just sent 1 officer to the gun range.
