Fascinating.
The current Third Edition of A Dictionary of Canadianisms on Historical Principles, DCHP-3, is the latest reiteration of a Canadian linguistics project that turned, sometime in the early 1960s, into a Canadian Centennial Project.

Prof. Harry Scargill (ling), Doug Leechman (anthro) & youngling Paddy Drysdale helped, as did Chuck Crate. The latter was a 1930s fascist leader (recent discovery)

Thanks for sharing! Our soft launch will turn into a "harder" launch around Canada Day (1 July).

Austrian Word of the Week 65 is "Kompromiss" โ compromise. Carefully crafted after WW2, K. is the ability to know the other & respect their limits. The world needs more "Kompromiss" these days, so let it blossom in & spread from AUT. @bundespraesident.at rightly called it a"cultural treasure".

13.02.2025 22:01 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Austrian Word of the Week number 64 (#AutWrdoWk) is "Pouvoir". Of old imperial stock it represents the multilingual character of Standard Austrian German. 07.02.2025 00:09 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Austrian Word of the Week 63 is a beauty: Sukkus, der (formal in Standard AutG for 'essence'). 23.01.2025 17:09 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0In Canada it's not based on the lending process as such, but on libraries stocking a given book. Once in, they pay for 25 years a decreasing amount (starting at $80 a year, down to $20 or so in its final years).

Prefixes are fascinating! They are added on to the beginning of a word to create an entirely new word. Sometimes this new word means the exact opposite of the original. Think of the prefix im-. Add it to words like possible, plausible, or perfect and their meanings become the exact opposite.
