Hurt the players' characters, yes. With the player's consent (ongoing or specific) and while making sure you won't also hurt the player. Collab with them. Keep surprises to the things there's ongoing consent for. Hurt the character with in-game things without hurting the player with irl things

The "for love of the game and the table" part sadly isn't true of every DM and I hate the stories I've heard of DMs taking away agency, ignoring triggers, hurting their players, etc. Finding people to play with is hard so the choice for folks is sometimes be miserable with this DM or not play at all

Still thinking about it, heart still full. James Gunn is many things, one being he's very very good at writing authentic characters with complicated and real emotions, in a way that isn't ham-fisted but just feels like a byproduct of the story. But it's intentional and wonderful to experience

This is a generalization but I think it's very very true

Your DM likely spends more money on your campaign than you think. We do it with full hearts, the way you buy something for someone's birthday or something.

Your DM is giving you a gift, or trying. The best gift they can manage. Out of love, for you and for the game.*
