With support from the GEF, Lewis recently visited Mount Kenya’s Lewis Glacier – one of Africa’s last three glacier areas – which is expected to disappear within 5 years. Its loss, alongside Kilimanjaro’s, threatens water supplies for around 2 million people.

πŸ”οΈ Mountains are the backbone of life on Earth.

They supply freshwater to over half of humanity & sustain biodiversity. Yet, they are vulnerable to degradation from human activities & climate change.

On #MountainDay, we celebrate their beauty & their indispensable role for people and nature.

CITES has agreed to move whale sharks, oceanic whitetips, and manta and devil rays to Appendix I, ending international commercial trade. This does not end the pressure on sharks, but it does give the work ahead a firmer base.

Protecting glaciers is about people, food, water, and stability.
Meltwater feeds rivers that support billions of people. As glaciers shrink, water becomes less predictable, affecting drinking supplies, farming, and energy downstream.

A clear view of Mount Kenya’s high peaks under a bright blue sky. Jagged rock towers rise sharply, with thin bands of the mountain’s last remaining glaciers clinging to the upper slopes. The lower landscape is dry and rocky, dotted with small green alpine plants.

Lewis will climb Mount Kenya this week to swim in a glacial lake at 4850m.

The glaciers on the mountain have between 3 to 5 years before they disappear.

As glaciers melt, our fresh water supplies diminish, threatening communities worldwide.

Did you know that -

🌎There are over 117 million lakes, covering nearly 4% of land.

🚰Although most freshwater is stored in glaciers and underground, lakes contain about 90% of the world’s surface supply, making them vital sources of accessible water.

River Seine: Waters reopens to swimmers after century-long ban For the first time in more than 100 years people will be able to swim legally in three sections of the river.

A hundred years ago, the Seine was declared too polluted to swim in. Today, it’s open again. A reminder that with investment and political will, rivers can be brought back to life. In the end, it’s a choice.
