The experiment methodology was that METR recruited 16 open-source devs to complete 246 real coding tasks, randomly assigning each to “AI Allowed” or “AI Disallowed.”

Devs estimated time saved with AI before & after each task, while screen recording to measured real-world AI productivity gains.

A research study on using AI coding assistants has shown that while developers believed they got a 20% productivity gain from using the tools, measurement showed a 19% decrease in productivity.

The issue seems to be that devs only count coding time saved but not the time spent prompting & reviewing

The primary heuristic determining if a business adopts about a “worker productivity” measure is “Will this inflict harm on the workforce?”

Estimation and iteration are antithetical.

If a human told you things that were correct 80% of the time but claimed, flat out, with absolute confidence, that they were correct 100% of the time, you would dislike them & never trust a word they say.
