A software engineering manager who can’t differentiate between agile, waterfall, and Taylorism is about as competent as a software engineer using FTP as β€œversion control”

It’s a terrible time to be someone who’s ever read a history book or understands cause & effect.

It’s like you’re tied to a train track and can do nothing but wait for the collision.

Not So Fast: AI Coding Tools Can Actually Reduce Productivity Study Shows That Even Experienced Developers Dramatically Overestimate Gains

The experiment methodology was that METR recruited 16 open-source devs to complete 246 real coding tasks, randomly assigning each to β€œAI Allowed” or β€œAI Disallowed.”

Devs estimated time saved with AI before & after each task, while screen recording to measured real-world AI productivity gains.

A research study on using AI coding assistants has shown that while developers believed they got a 20% productivity gain from using the tools, measurement showed a 19% decrease in productivity.

The issue seems to be that devs only count coding time saved but not the time spent prompting & reviewing

The primary heuristic determining if a business adopts about a β€œworker productivity” measure is β€œWill this inflict harm on the workforce?”

WFH:
βœ… +productivity
❌ worker harm
❌ adoption

AI:
βœ… +productivity
βœ… worker harm
βœ… adoption

When RTO was being pushed the only productivity metric management cared about was visible asses in seats. Somehow supposed AI productivity increases escape such reasoning

So what's a "monad" in programming terms?

A monad wraps data, adds context & allows for chaining through immutable operations.

JS: Promise wraps data & adds "time" as context

Rust: Option wraps data & adds "existence" context

Monads have three laws: Associative, left identity, and right identity

YouTube video by vlogbrothers You’re Not Addicted to Content, You’re Starving for Information

This video from @hankgreen.bsky.social is a great metaphor and description of what I think has happened to the Internet, and our overall "consumption" of information, no matter how nutritious or empty the calories of information we consume are.

If a human told you things that were correct 80% of the time but claimed, flat out, with absolute confidence, that they were correct 100% of the time, you would dislike them & never trust a word they say. All I'm really suggesting is for people to treat chatbots with that same distrust & antagonism.

Will we ever get past the "curb appeal" problem of software engineering - that revulsion they feel at the sight of automated tests, collaborative coding, continuous integration, and incremental development?

I'm not sure what makes them as emotionally jarring as they seem to be.

Depression looks a lot like sadness so for many years normies treated depressed people like regular people who were sad.

I think we will come to view conspiratorial thinking similarly. It looks like someone thinking deeply about a topic, but in reality it’s much closer to an amphetamine addiction.

Noem Plots Reality Show Where Migrants Fight for Citizenship A Homeland Security official told the Daily Beast that the show is in the early stages of vetting, though approval has not been givenβ€”or denied.

Kristi Noem has been working with the producer of β€œDuck Dynasty” to pitch a reality TV showβ€”titled β€œThe American”—where immigrants will compete in a string of challenges across the country β€œfor the honor of fast-tracking their way to U.S. citizenship,” according to a new report.

all the code! my guess is this will go like clothing: the pieces can be cut by a laser but sewing is a fundamentally adaptive activity. while agents asymptotically chip away at adaptive work, they create more of everything. even sublinear growth in bugs means endless adaptive work for humans
