12.11.2025 08:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0doesn't bode well that "what concrete contributions have you already made to the field" is being asked in assistant professor job interviews. seems like an obvious enough question but makes it clear that ABDs prob not seriously considered. previously early career positions now more mid-career.

We also analyzed the three primary metaphors researchers use to describe their own studies: Ecologies, infrastructures, and ecosystems. These are evocative but often used interchangeably and imprecisely. The lack of clarity and conceptual slippage of these terms should be addressed by the subfield.
02.09.2025 12:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Heat map of the United States using different colors to show where local news census research projects have been conducted.
Through a content analysis of local news census research, we find that most studies stick to a single context (usually state), traditional media, and limited documenting. We also present this map that shows where studies have (and have not) been conducted. Most of the US lacks an ecosystem analysis.
02.09.2025 12:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In this study, we look at what we call "local news census" research, which attempts to map, measure, and assess the health of a geographically-bound local news system. Primarily produced through white papers and research reports, these studies give a snapshot of a locale's current news offerings.
02.09.2025 12:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Out now in Journalism Studies!
As the crisis of local news supply has deepened in the US, local news ecosystem research has attempted to address this. In this paper, @reginalawrence.bsky.social and I conducted meta-analytical work looking at this research subfield. π§΅

25.08.2025 08:37 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Wrapped up from our Discussion: Scholars should consider implementing this scale when analyzing news audiences, given its demonstrated functionality at identifying a previously invisible group: those who are alienated by the provision of news as they understand and experience it.
25.08.2025 08:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Coefficient plot from the manuscript titled "Regression Coefficients where News is Not Made for Me is an Independent Variable" with 5 plot boxes with the following titles: "(i) Total News Consumption," "(ii) News Avoidance," "(iii) Overall Current Affairs Knowledge," "(iv) Autoregressive Knowledge," and "(v) Misinformation Beliefs." There are pink lines for UK results and teal lines for Brazil results. There is a research note at the bottom of the figure.
We also find that greater feelings of alienation are associated with negative outcomes. Despite consuming more news than their counterparts, people who believe news is not made for them also selectively avoid more news, get more knowledge questions incorrect, and believe more misinformation.
25.08.2025 08:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Coefficient plot from the manuscript titled "Linear Regression Results with News is Not Made for Me as DV" with variables on the y-axis and coefficient estimates on the x-axis. There are pink lines for UK results and teal lines for Brazil results.
Using a panel survey in Brazil & UK, we see that people who feel the most alienated from news tend to be younger, lower SES, have lower news self-efficacy, greater interest in soft news, and have more attention problems. These findings highlight the overwhelming relentlessness of news cycles.

The News is Not Made for Me scale is an 8-item scale that investigates the growing gap between news providers and audiences as well as audience inequality gaps related to news use and benefits. It gets at what we call "agnostic" features of news - such as pace, language, and access.
