Marine ecosystem modeller at Plymouth Marine Lab
A bit of Christmas cheer was had at the lab yesterday, drawing a reindeer with GPS in the PML Christmas Fun Run!
18.12.2025 09:56 β π 12 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0An excellent first day at the Royal Society event on 'Marine biodiversity loss, fishing and climate change', including this inspiring talk from Camille Parmesan. Always interesting to compare terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Looking forward to more talks tomorrow!
08.12.2025 20:41 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Just published, a land-mark paper by Annemarie Eckes-Shephard et al.! It assesses the performance of a new generation of Demography-enabled Dynamic Global Vegetation (D-DGVMs), that attempt to simulate the changing size and age structure of trees in forests.
24.10.2025 03:12 β π 41 π 13 π¬ 0 π 0Our paper is now published! A inter-model evaluation at a variety of forest biomes of nine "state of the art" demographic vegetation models. Well done @annemarie-es.bsky.social and @tompugh.bsky.social for leading this endeavour!

21.03.2025 11:44 β π 3 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0The UK imports 57 billion cubic metres (bcm) in gas, whereas the EU imports 74 bcm from Russia.
Energy is key to defeating Russia.
The EU still imports Russian gas, spending >20 billion a year.
The UK imports similar amounts, mainly from mainland Europe
Stronger UK climate policy will help the EU ditch Russian gas.
Join PML's Benthic Ecologist Tom Mesher and Science Communicator Amy Kenworthy for a hands-on look at benthos sampling, explore diverse marine species like polychaetes, arthropods, echinoderms, and mollusks, and discover how #taxonomy helps us understand our oceans π www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMbu...

Great to visit CEFAS yesterday with Helen Powley to talk about our work on two-way coupling ERSEM-mizer: impacts on mesozooplankton, carbon cycling and interactions with benthic fauna as part of EU projects NECCTON and @oceanicu.bsky.social

In addition to studying ocean transport, particle tracking models can be used for fun! Animation made using the model PyLag (github.com/pmlmodelling...), which I coded while at @plymouthmarine.bsky.social, and surface ocean currents from CMEMS (Product: GLOBAL_REANALYSIS_PHY_001_031). Enjoy!
20.12.2024 16:47 β π 7 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Exciting #PhD opportunity with @plymouthmarine.bsky.social & @bristoluni.bsky.social's Prof Monteiro.
The project will be about the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems in the future.
