Saltmarsh and estuary at Maldon
UKCEH are working with The Crown Estate to improve understanding of how saltmarshes remove nutrients from estuarine and coastal waters.
Findings will help clarify the wider benefits saltmarsh provides and inform work on integrating nutrient remediation into the emerging UK-based #SaltmarshCode.

Saltmarsh on Wallasea Island at high tide
New UKCEH research shows UK saltmarshes are significant carbon sinks, storing ~6.5 t COβe haβ»ΒΉ yrβ»ΒΉ, comparable to mangroves and seagrasses.
Saltmarshes aren't yet included in the UK GHG Inventory, but the evidence base is strengthening.
