2025 β Ukraine has driven out the Russians and a soldier with PTSD joins a woman identifying bodies left across the scorched landscape. A dystopian vision, yet reality turned out even worse. Shot like an art film it's haunting imagery stayed with me long after. #filmsky
The urge to watch horny power fantasy cartoons for Japanese teenagers is not healthy for adults.

A stark, unromanticized look at first contact between Jesuit missionaries and Indigenous peoples in 17th-century Canada. A grueling journey through faith, survival, and cultural collision, free from Hollywood gloss. No noble savages here.

Film rec: The Ascent (1977)
Two Soviet partisans trapped behind enemy lines in WWII. Poetic, and devastating - only through such stories can we begin to fathom the cost paid by Russians in the fight against European imperial fascism. The directorβs husband later made Come and See (1985). #filmsky
The new wave makeup owes everything to this old Bauhaus ballet I think. youtu.be/mHQmnumnNgo
17.02.2025 11:20 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sounds promising! The LS script is even better than the makeup, probably partly because the writers barely spoke English, I think one should run every script back and forth through google translate a few times, would make for better dialogue.

We were told technology would free us from oppressive institutions, but instead power shifted to invisible, unaccountable forces. Technology carried ideology and disempowered the people. Adam Curtisβthe original video essayist. #filmsky

The best childhood movieβif you hated childhood. A pitch black comedy portrait of adolescent misery that follows 11 year old Dawn Wiener, an outcast grasping for acceptance in a world that couldnβt care less. Over the top β but all too real. #filmsky
Film rec: Belladonna of Sadness (1973)
A Japanese animated film in gorgeous β70s psychedelic watercolor, depicting a witch hunt in medieval France. Brutal yet beautiful, though undeniably tainted by a voyeuristic gaze. Still, a spellbinding experienceβarguably a precursor to Perfect Blue. #filmsky
Film rec: Aniara (2018)
Swedish sci-fi where a luxury space liner veers off course, turning into a drifting existential prison. Based on a an allegorical poem, itβs a dark, hypnotic meditation on detatchment from nature, and the cosmic indifference of the void. #filmsky
Film rec: Quest for Fire (1981)
A prehistoric adventure with no spoken dialogue, just grunts and gestures. Not as tacky as other caveman filmsβit's raw, immersive, and unique. Also, it proposes that the missionary position is the foundation for the whole project of civilization.

Film rec: The Last Valley (1971)
Can you name a film about the Thirty Yearsβ War? The Last Valley is a great one. A bleak, overlooked epic where war and its ideologies descend upon a once-pristine village. Stunning cinematography and rich moral complexity. #filmsky
Film rec: Forbidden Zone (1980)
Before Danny Elfman became a Hollywood darling, he and his brother made this outrageous, offensive, and bizarre cartoonish musical. Think Alice in Wonderland with sex and drugs. It deserves as big a following as Rocky Horror, I think. #filmsky

Film rec: Hardware (1990)
A punk, post-apocalyptic murder-bot film with rock star cred. It seems trashy, but itβs actually great. Director Richard Stanley is a genuinely talented weirdo, and this movie nails that synthwave, VHS, faux-nostalgia vibe like nothing else. #filmsky

Film rec: The Devils (1971)
My favorite Russell film tackles the demonic possessions in Loudun, 1634. A timeless tale of human liberal spirit, sexual repression, and the corruption of power. The horny, hunchbacked nun is an especially phenomenal character. #filmsky youtu.be/DC_Z4I62e5Y
Film rec: The Thief of Bagdad (1924)
I can only imagine how magical this must have been to see in its time. One of the most dazzling adventures ever put to film. The scope and craft of silent-era epics were astounding, and movies didnβt get much bigger than this. #filmsky

Film rec: Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)
Itβs like a Terminator prequel. A military AI becomes sentient and seizes control of nukes. Scary computers were big post-2001, and I'm sure weβre due for a renaissance. A fascinating film with bold concepts for its time. #filmsky

Film rec: Nirvana (1997)
Italian mystic cyberpunk about a sentient video game character and its creator. Perhaps not the finest cinema, but the filmmakersβ passion shines through, and the cult value is sky-high. Any film with βan Ayurvedic datachipβ deserves your love. #filmsky

Film rec: The Lathe of Heaven (1980)
A forgotten TV movie adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guinβs novel where a manβs dreams alter reality. High ambition meets low budget as the filmmakers lean on their pioneering video art roots. Plenty of Taoist themes to unpack. #filmsky

Film rec: Picassos Γ€ventyr (1978)
The best Swedish comedians of their generation made a film about Pablo Picasso, and itβs as funny as it is touching. Chaplinβs heart and slapstick blended with Monty Pythonβs absurdity in a wild journey through 20th century art history

Zulawskiβs last film is a feverish, uncompromising blend of absurdity, mystery, and existential angst. Bizarre yet cerebral, its fragmented structure and erratic dialogue assert a uniquely chaotic beauty. A fantastic Gombrowicz adaptation. #filmsky

Film rec: The Lover (1992)
In 1929 French Indochina, a 15-year-old girl embarks on a love affair with a wealthy Chinese man. A semi-autobiographical, poignant exploration of desire, class, and identity with a poetic approach to a difficult subject matter. #filmsky

If you kill yourself, you end up in an afterlife where everything is the sameβjust worse. If that sounds funny to you, this existential romantic comedy will be up your alley. Tom Waits and Gogol Bordello provides ambience. #filmsky youtu.be/H1xRtrKq1kc
