At Cabaret yesterday, Cliff said his line “…if you’re not against all this then you’re for it. Or you might as well be”. The audience interrupted the scene to applaud that line so strongly it stopped the show. Doing a show about the onset of fascism right now is. . . chilling.

That’s an insult to Ernst Stavro, if I’m being honest.

Today in Broadway and James Bond history, 11-14-1964: two Ernst Stavro Blofelds, the great Donald Pleasance and Charles Gray, opened together in Jean Anouilh’s “Poor Bitos” at the Cort Theatre (now the James Earl Jones). If only Telly Savalas showed up!

Some shots from Sondergaard’s wardrobe and makeup tests for the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. She was originally chosen to play the role before Margaret Hamilton took it over.

Sondergaard was the very first Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner for her very first film, Anthony Adverse (1936), which I have yet to see. She had already appeared in 9 Broadway productions, including the original Broadway run of Eugene O’Neill’s Strange Interlude.

Starting out at Bluesky with a thread of appreciation for Academy Award winner Gale Sondergaard, currently my number one most-watched actor for 2024 on Letterboxd.
