Pino's Pizzeria reopens in new space in St. Paul months after sudden closure After 37 years in St. Paul's skyway system, Pino's Pizzeria was forced to shut its doors this spring when the building was condemned. But this week, the family-run business reopened just across the street, with a new space, a renewed energy and the same old soul.

Pino’s Pizzeria is an important reminder of how small businesses fuel our economy and energize our neighborhoods. I’m thrilled to welcome this Saint Paul staple back to the heart of our downtown.

St. Paul rallied to make Minnesota Yacht Club music fest its most rocking summer event Tested by flooding last summer, city representatives welcome a third day and added buzz for the second annual rock festival.

Not only did we rally—we added a third day, we’re hosting 30,000 more festivalgoers, and we’re reestablishing as a premier outdoor venue in Minnesota. None of this would be possible without the heavy lifting by our Saint Paul Parks and Public Works teams. 48 hours to go!

Students converge in Twin Cities to become gun violence prevention advocates In the wake of a deadly attack on Minnesota lawmakers, more than 100 volunteers with Students Demand Action will be on the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus this week to learn all about the power of advocating for gun violence prevention in politics.

Our young people shouldn’t know the trauma of gun violence. Yet, too often it shapes their reality. There’s no stronger call to action than the voices of our youth, standing up for a safer future they deserve. We must meet their courage with the urgent change this moment demands.

Today, our Saint Paul Police Department responded quickly and decisively to a call for shots fired in our Payne/Phalen neighborhood, preventing what could have been a far more dangerous situation. I am grateful for their actions and those of our Saint Paul Fire Department in caring for the victims injured by reckless gun violence. We hold the victims in our thoughts and pray for a full, speedy recovery.

St. Paul Fire Department reaches milestone with Black firefighters Diversity within the St. Paul Fire Department is more prevalent than ever. The department has the highest number of Black firefighters in promoted positions in department history.

Intentionally building teams that reflect the experiences of our neighbors is a core principle of our Community-First Public Safety strategy. Representation builds relationships and trust in public service. Our SPFD responders not only safeguard our city, they embody the neighborhoods they serve.

On this 160th anniversary of Juneteenth, let us reflect on the unfinished work of justice and ask what more each one of us can do to build a community where freedom and equality are more than words, but lived experiences for all. Happy Juneteenth!

Rep. Melissa Hortman reflected the best of us all. She showed up for Minnesotans every day, embracing her role in public service with fervor and conviction. The legacy she leaves behind—one of generosity, collaboration, and humility—is ours to carry forward.

Tonight’s arrest gives us some semblance of relief—though nothing erases the pain and trauma of this devastating violence. The targeted murder of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and shooting of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, is nothing short of an act of evil. I am grateful for the relentless work of our law enforcement who brought this search to an end without further loss of life. Though this arrest is an important step in the search for answers, it’s far from the justice the Hortman and Hoffman families, and our community, deserve. I am praying for peace and comfort for both families, and wish the Hoffmans a speedy recovery.

I’m heartbroken by the targeted murder of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the shooting of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette in their homes last night. That someone would use a police badge—something meant to symbolize safety and trust—to carry out this kind of horror is beyond comprehension.​ ​ Melissa believed in people enough to fight for them—not for headlines or attention, but because she cared. Her work, her wisdom, and her friendship meant a great deal to me, and to so many who had the privilege to know her.​ ​ This shakes us to the core—not just because of who was targeted, but because of what it says about where we are. Sakeena and I are praying today for the Hortman and Hoffman families, for all who know and love them, and for the soul of a country where political violence feels far too common.​

There were zero gun-related homicides in the first 21 weeks of 2025. Crime has decreased two years in a row. And we’re only pushing forward—anything short of prevention isn’t enough. (2/2)

Violent crime is down in St. Paul. Here’s what’s working. The St. Paul Police Department’s new nonfatal shooting unit and World Youth Connect have taken different approaches to curb shootings and other serious crimes before they lead to homicides.

Our collaborative efforts with our police, Office of Neighborhood Safety, and county attorneys to interrupt patterns of violence through smart, people-focused public safety solutions drive real results. Non-fatal shootings are down 51%, doubling the case clearance rate. (1/2)
