The impact of ECHR on UK immigration overrated
ECtHR stops one UK deportation every 4/5 years
UK courts - most recent figures are for 2021 - blocked 2.5% of deportations on "family life" grounds

Last time the Conservatives proposed banning doctors from striking, we did some interesting comparative research on strikes and essential services across Europe @ukandeu.bsky.social which is still a great read.

Game, set, and match
Worth a read from @joellegrogan.bsky.social on the false promises of magic solutions in the reform of the ECHR or it's domestic application in the UK for politicians perceived problems with migration in an unstable world:

With Suella Braverman having published a 'blueprint' for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights, catch up on this explainer by @joellegrogan.bsky.social and @alicedonald.bsky.social - on how the UK could go about leaving and what the consequences would be.
ukandeu.ac.uk/explainers/l...
Many are commenting on the Braverman paper as a whole, but one note that - true, there is nothing to stop the GFA from being amended.
Just as nothing stops any other major international agreement from being renegotated except time, a lot of good faith, political will and mutual interest.
Explainer on how the UK could leave the ECHR - and what it would mean.

This was a great conversation on rule of law - stand out for me was how much we can take for granted.
For those following the ECHR debates, also point of interesting discussion.
The United Kingdomβs most senior judge has rejected claims that judges βinterfere unwarrantably in the democratic processβ and that their decisions are based on applying βvalues which are not shared by parliament or the general publicβ.
