#throwbackthursday: For Against’s Echelons tour began 38 years ago today in Iowa City

This 7’’ followed the previous year’s Naked EP, which was the Dentists’ first US release (also on Independent Project Records). AllMusic would later call them “arguably the first Brit-pop band” [⬇️]

A posthumous release that’s also a celebration of the artist’s lifelong quest for a sound that, stripped to the bones, is all the more powerful and cathartic for its restraint, Piqued was recorded by For Against’s Jeffrey Runnings at home on an old 8-track cassette machine.

‘Heretofore’ has all the murky, abstract-yet-stripped-down allure of lifelong favourites of For Against frontman Jeffrey Runnings like Section 25 and the Comsat Angels, aptly recorded on an old 8-track tape machine.

It only takes the first seconds of drum machine and guitar to feel like we’re transported back in time - more precisely, sometime between the tail end of the 70s and the dawn of the 80s, a time when post-punk was discovering new pensive sides to itself via angular rhythms and grey-toned visions.

‘Heretofore’ is out today. It’s the second single off Piqued, Jeffrey Runnings’ last album (coming to you on 11th July).

Alison’s voice sounds fragile as it drifts along the razor's edge between vulnerability and power. Are her words questions or statements? Tension hums like a storm on the horizon, but pain, pleasure and release are washed over with piano cascading into misted fantasy.

Co-written and co-produced with Stephen Masucci of The Lost Patrol and engineered by Larry Alexander (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Diana Ross), the single is an expansive soundscape that shimmers with the melodic nostalgia of a rainy day, laced with a twinge of foreboding strangeness.
