FreeCAD 1.0 is out! The improvements to the Sketcher workbench are huge. Of course the headline features are the "topological naming problem" mitigation and integrated assembly workbench (but I haven't tried the assembly workbench yet). Also, new logo! Congrats to the team and contributors.

Stepmania/ITGmania was a notable program that just seemed to work better on Windows for me, but I know people are using it happily on Linux. Hopefully I can get it running nicely 🤞

I set up a Debian partition from the very beginning with this computer but I haven't used it very much. Tonight I booted it up and upgraded from bullseye to bookworm. It seems to have gone smoothly!

I've mostly used Windows 11 on my desktop for the last two years, but I've dumped Fusion 360 in favor of FreeCAD and I recently found out that most of my Steam games can probably run in Linux, so I don't have many applications tying me to the platform.

I needed a new router for my home network, and I saw a suggestion that OPNsense may be a secure, flexible open source option. After spending several hours reading about routers, access points, OPNsense and OpenWRT, I decided not to try to build my own router for now. But my curiosity persists...

The enum also takes a const generic parameter for the size of an array, another feature I just figured out how to use. This part felt a little weirder but useful to know.

I'm working on a little program in Rust, which I am still learning. I used impl on an enum this evening and I was very pleased that it worked.

on cohost. from the era of interactive widgets in css, and pressed up tightly against the limits of the platform came this post, "css colour picker". the post text reads "it's not interactive. you just pick a colour you like,and enjoy it for a little while" followed by six colour swatches of various hues in relation to the site's background colour. all muted but distinct, maroon through purples, blues, teal and a seafoam green. the post concludes "i hope you enjoy the colour you picked". this is entirely lowercase, both in text and in spirit.

Recently I've been working on some mostly-aesthetic upgrades.

Colors! The rainbow effect here is based on the first rainbow cycle code snippet I found; I want to do some different animations and color gradients later on. I am deep in a yak shave with the firmware/software that drives the lighting effects so who knows how long until I get to that.

It's a little plain without color, but it's meant to have colorful backlighting! See here with individual lights showing clearly through the frosted decal, and then heavily diffused by an Ikea cutting board in between the lights and the panel.

The design is printed on frosted vinyl, with front adhesive (the ink and the adhesive are on the same side), and there is a layer of white ink underneath to make it closer to opaque. Here it is from the other side.

I recently got these decals I ordered for my dance pad. The process to draw them was overly complicated and the detailed Blender-rendered lighting on the metallic arrow outline mostly just looks gray. But! I'm still very happy with the result.
