This is an iconic fantasy painting! Did you know that this was not Elmore’s original design, though? Gary Gygax rejected Elmore’s first draft for being “too busy”. It featured more characters and was from a slightly different angle:

Happy birthday yo Larry Elmore! I got into D&D a few years before Larry came to TSR, so I never owned the Basic box set he did the cover for in 1983. But I did own the Endless Quest Book: Pillars of Pentegarn (1982), and that’s the Elmore painting that trips my nostalgia more than any other.

In the late 1940s, Disney cartoonist Carl Barks, transformed Donald Duck into a pulp adventure hero. With the introduction of Scrooge McDuck and the town of Duckburg, he created an entire adventure mythos that endures to this day.

More accolades for @chaosium.bsky.social! As the oldest active TTRPG game publisher (50 years and counting), this honor is much deserved.

Life comes at you fast sometimes, and it can hit hard when it does. Things are not easy for my little family right now, but we just gotta put our heads down and keep on keeping on.

Jean “Moebius” Giraud is best known for his science fiction artwork, but he did co-create and brilliantly illustrate the Blueberry comicbook. Set in the American Old West, the scenery allowed Giraud to show off his skills at painting gorgeous landscapes.

This cover launched of one of the greatest story arcs and one of the greatest creative runs in all of comicbook history. It blew my mind when I bought it as a kid, and it remains one of my favorite comics to this day. Happy birthday Beta Ray Bill! Art and story by Walt Simonson.

I found the first book to be truly terrible, and I’m a fan of the LitRPG genre. The frustrating part is, this series is massively popular among the LitRPG fanbase.

I avoided it for a while because I assumed it was all just an excuse for sophomoric humor, but it’s actually much more sophisticated than that. Yes, the humor is prevalent, but that’s needed to cut the dark and serious undertones a bit. The main character’s emotional arc is solid and well written.

My answer: I aim to write a rollicking adventure tale with a little bit of soul that readers will enjoy. That’s the very definition of pop fiction, and I’m totally fine with that. I am a storyteller, first and foremost, and my aim is to entertain as many as possible.

In a Powers novel, the prose is almost a character unto itself.

I’ve actually reread both trilogies within the past couple of years. Daley’s books are still fun Star Wars romps. Smith’s Lando books, however, are clearly non-SW science fiction manuscripts that have been reworked to kinda resemble SW. they don’t hold up nearly as well as the Han Solo trilogy.

This novel is absolutely brilliant, even more so than a typical Powers novel. It is mind-bendingly weird, but the straightforward prose allows the reader to power through the chaos and follow the thread of the main plot.

The period between the release of Star Wars and ESB there was no SW multimedia franchise. So when the Han Solo trilogy (by Brian Daley) was published in ‘79-‘80, my SW starved self devoured them. I read and re-read the books until they fell apart. Han was the definition of cool!

A lot of those early RPG artists just kind of faded away in the 90s.

It looks like he got into commercial illustration and left the RPG industry behind. His website hasn’t been updated since 2020, so I’m not sure if he’s still working or not.

The design is intricate yet sturdy, with an impressive amount of fine detail and some ingenious use of parts. And at just $26, you get a lot of build for a relatively low cost.
