I hadn't really written any rust before this year, nothing but the barest of learning stuff, but suddenly it's nearly all I've written over the past 4 months (this is the largest repo but there's another one that's newer / smaller)

I really did not expect to enjoy it this much 😅

if your text editor doesn't come with an extension language it's DOA. it's the community that keeps text editors useful, one group or company can't match the velocity or meet the needs of everyone

why don't most http servers support overall request timeouts? every service with an api needs this for their users and to protect their infrastructure but no one seems to do it, they all only have timeouts for specific operations

but honestly bless datafusion, truly one of the best bits of software I’ve ever used (s/o to @andrewlamb1111.bsky.social et al) #datafusion #rust

and anything outside of c++ or rust is gonna use a crazy amount of memory and cpu to do anything. and you need to bring in external query engines like datafusion if you need to re-sort before writing again. what a mess

and then you have to deal with type conversions between arrow and parquet, which isn’t 1:1

like fuck you if you start with arrow ipc stream format, you basically need to convert to arrow ipc file format if you want to sort or query the values in any way before writing to parquet. it essentially means you’re using like a little less than 3x the original storage space…

god, writing parquet is such a fucking pain to make optimal, especially if you’re converting from arrow ipc…
