Happy St Ealswitha's Day!

Ealswitha (or Elswith or Ealhswith) was Queen of Wessex as the wife of Alfred the Great.

One of her links to Somerset is spending part of 878 AD hiding at Athelney from the Vikings.

On this day in 1881, Diana Bevin nรฉe Tidbould gave birth to her seventh child in Winsford, an Exmoor village in #Somerset. This child was Ernest Bevin, who became a Labour politician.

Diana took on roles like midwife, kitchen assistant and a worker at the local Royal Oak pub.

Today in 2010, Andrรฉe Peel died in Long Ashton at the incredible age of 105.

Born and raised in France as Andrรฉe Virot, she joined the French Resistance during World War II and saved the lives of 102 allied pilots. Andrรฉe survived torture and concentration camps.
