‘Almost unimaginable’: these ants are different species but share a mother Ant queens of one species clone ants of another to create hybrid workers that do their bidding.

woah this is genuinely, utterly WILD

Ant queens of one species produce males of another species, so she can then mate with them and produce hybrid workers!

This is so gloriously weird I can't quite compute it 🤯🧪🐜

New addition to the spectacular life cycle of Osedax worms: sex of O. japonicus is genetically (not environmentally) determined since larvae show both morphological and transcriptomic signatures of gender. Might help us explain male dwarfism rdcu.be/eCHBe

Sweden has vast ‘old growth’ forests – but they are being chopped down faster than the Amazon Research suggests these forests could disappear by the 2070s.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

One of the most common arguments you hear from fans of generative ‘AI’ is that it’s not plagiarizing people’s work, it’s just learning like a human learns. So I’m going to break down why that’s just not true, and why it can never be true, with the existing systems. 1/

Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change. Air pollution fell substantially as the city restricted car traffic and made way for parks and bike lanes.

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.”

Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability & quality of life.

Common sense.

Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

Fact-checking Donald Trump's claim that wind turbines kill whales The former president blamed wind farms for a spike in whale deaths - but his claims don't stand up.

There’s no evidence that offshore wind kills whales. But you know what does kill whales? Commercial fishing kills at least 300,000 whales and dolphins every year.

A rightwing minister told Sweden to get tough on crime – until his own son was caught in a Nazi scandal | Martin Gelin In our current political climate, why is migration minister Johan Forssell surprised that a teenage boy might be drawn to extremism? asks journalist Martin Gelin

My latest for The Guardian:
A government that claims to take concerns over crime and national security seriously, while ignoring violent neo-nazi groups, will struggle with its credibility.
Sweden has a long tradition of refusing to talk about racism. Racism could still decide the next election:

Cooler Cities Save Lives Cities and towns need to go green to survive a hotter world

Increasing vegetation in urban areas by 30% would have prevented 1.16 million of those heat-related deaths from 2000 to 2019

Botanical gardens, wetlands, rain gardens, green walls, tree-lined streets cool city air by 4 to 5 degrees C.

Today, more starving Palestinians were lured into “aid distribution sites”.

They went in hope that they might find a bag of flour.

They were gunned down and murdered instead.

What utter inhumanity. End all arms sales to Israel, now.

Israel hasn't stopped gunning down the Palestinians they're starving, as those Palestinians try to feed themselves

There is nothing wrong with continuing to say it: these are war crimes, this is genocide, this is murder. It must be stopped, and those perpetrating the crimes must be held accountable
