Gender is a social construct and is not scientifically defined unless you count sociology. And biological sex in humans has never been just xx and xy. There are several variations, and they don't all get expressed as one of the two binary human genders you think are the only to exist.

The US has been issuing gender neutral passports if you request it for a couple years. So declaring that there are only 2 genders in the eyes of the US government will invalidate those passports. You can still see this in Google search results, but the pages are now missing if you click the link.

If you need to escape reality, I can't recommend enough the Iron Druid Series by Kevin Hearne. I loved them so much I bought them for my grandmother. Great in print, but if you also enjoy audiobooks, the talking Irish Wolfhound makes many appearances in the series.
