It would only take a couple of minor changes in the lyrics, and a slightly different tempo and tone, to turn "Little Boxes" into a song about racial integration and upward mobility.

As a side note, the song "Little Boxes" comes across very different from an Asian American point of view - it's from a time when mainstream culture was starting to realize the downsides of suburban living, while Asian American families were still fighting to have that choice.

As Grace mentions, these houses were in areas where Asian Americans were first able to buy houses, during a time when not all neighborhoods were desegregated yet.

Today they are mostly an Asian American housing type. bsky.app/profile/gspe...

Little Boxes - they're the same style as the ones in Daly City made famous by that mid-20th century song.

It's a housing type that is unique to Daly City and the west & south side of San Francisco - a 25-foot wide, 2-story townhouse with garage.

Other suburbs have detached houses on wider lots.

watercolor sketch of a couple of critters, one looks like a small pink shark but with rabbit-like ears and front legs, with a grin showing teeth. The other is a blue critter that looks like a shark but with two fins on its head, two side fins like a normal shark, and hind legs that it is standing upright on. It has forward-facing eyes and an open mouth showing teeth.

this was the drawing prompt I didn't know I needed πŸ˜‚

With how popular both labubu and blahaj are in Chinese-speaking countries, it wouldn't surprise me if an unofficial combo critter already exists!

Good thread on a California labor victory: winning a 30% raise over five years for adjunct professors at private colleges, who are notoriously underpaid and often have to work additional jobs to make enough money to live.

I've always wondered what's behind those little square windows just under the roof of Victorian houses in San Francisco, from now on I'll think, "giant capybara plushies"

Agree, though that type of voter is probably already voting - we need more of them, it would help to get more people to take that view

Mobilizing progressive, immigrant, & renter voters will be how Democrats win back Congress and the White House.

The current president won by turning out a lot of infrequent conservative voters in addition to the Republicans that vote all the time.

We got to do the same on our side.

02.08.2025 15:20 β€” πŸ‘ 12    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

The details of this strategy will vary from city to city, but the Zohran coalition would probably work well in the Bay Area also, like New York City, we have a lot of progressives, Muslims and South Asians (far more in the Bay vs NYC), and renters.

Changing the party's voter base makes sense - if you're an outsider candidate challenging the establishment, you win by getting people who feel they've also been left out to actually vote.

02.08.2025 15:13 β€” πŸ‘ 12    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Excellent thread on how Zohran won, first by turning out new voters:
- Neighborhoods that vote progressive
- Voters that share candidate's background (Muslim, South Asian)
- Large apartment complexes

And then contesting the rest of the city also, winning many new voters (immigrants, young voters)

As part of @muniforever.bsky.social's campaign to fund Muni, we invite you to the Muni Forever Summit on 8/20. We need to form a citywide vision to fund Muni. This summit will create the building blocks to create that vision and a way to achieve it.

This is a major reason why we are facing the Silver Tsunami in my city without any stair-free new homes built after early 1970s

Great article. Conference realignment happened at just the right time, creating nationwide conferences out of what had previously been regional.

There's a lot of housing related data in the new AAPI Data portal. Here's one useful chart for housing policy - while multigenerational households are often associated with Asian Americans, significant numbers live on their own or with others of the same generation, and 3-gen households are rare.
