Ricky Gervais just gave the best awards acceptance speech of his career, and he managed it by not showing up. At the Golden Globes, Wanda Sykes presented the award for Best Stand-up Comedy Performance, which Gervais was nominated in for his special Mortality. Gervais, despite being a Globes hosting vet, did not show up to the ceremony, and Sykes used that to her benefit. β€œRicky Gervais, I love you … for not being here,” she said while presenting the award. β€œI love you, Ricky, but if you win, and I get to accept the award on your behalf, you are going to thank God.” The audience then laughed heartily, but she wasn’t done. β€œAnd the trans community!” she added.

Supreme court denies hearing for challenge to same-sex marriage
The supreme court has rejected hearing a case that challenges the constitutional right for same-sex couples to marry.

The court denied a long-shot effort from Kim Davis, a former Kentucky county clerk, who refused to issue marriage licenses on religious grounds. As a result, Davis was jailed and ordered to pay thousands of dollars in damages. As part of her appeal to the supreme court, she asked the court to overturn their landmark 2015 decision.
