Incorporating student discourse is a great way to demonstrate cognitive empathy in the classroom. Part of this is 'Making Students’ Thinking Visible', where students: Do the majority of the talking. Are expected to explain their thinking & Show they are listening to one another.

A personal goal of mine this year has been to get back to reading regularly - I just finished my 2nd book of the school year, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBrice. It was a really interesting read on 'in race, religion and personal history.' On to the next! 📚

It was a great Friday seeing what schools across MCPS have been planning for Hispanic Heritage Month! 🤩

Friday is a popular day to give quizzes and assessments 📝 There are a lot of different components that go into assessing learning:

Content instruction is in full swing across MCPS! But how can you be sure your students are learning? By checking for understanding of course! 🔍 As your unit progresses, your questions should also be progressively open-ended and more comprehension based 💭

You can also turn it into a self-assessment at the end of a lesson, "How well do you feel you reached our objective for today? What do you understand well, and what do you need more practice with?" Objectives won't be meaningful until we make them meaningful!

A common thing I just from teachers is that, "Students don't care about the objective." Try highlighting your learning verb and turning into a mini academic vocabulary lesson, ask your students, "What does it mean to categorize or compare something?"

Teachers will be able to...create and communicate mastery level objectives at the beginning of every lesson. ✏️

Posting the objective and agenda is just for when people observe our classes, right? 🙅‍♀️ No! Framing the learning for our students can help them place their new learning in context, check it out: 👓
