I played it all on day 1 and went from going “wow, this new rendition is pretty atmospheric” to wanting nothing more than the game to end BUT THEN IT ENDED ON THE WORST NOTE

With that said, I am almost certain that my viewpoint is biased and probably does not resemble what the creators had intended, but there was so much that was similar to real life that I couldn’t NOT draw parallels. I could draw even more parallel, but that‘s for another day.

The aspect of the boxtrolls hiding in a box also feels like hiding in the closet, until you come out and show who you are on the inside, where some people (homophobes) may be disgusted at how open you are despite complaining previously about you hiding in plain sight.

The last thing that made me see the movie this way was the fact that the boxtrolls were forced to make a machine that captured other boxtrolls, similarly to how companies like Disney made movies depicting LGBT+ people as evil, despite being partially made by them.

The whole aspect of her fantasizing about the made-up aspects of the boxtrolls only to find out that it was all false reminds me of people who are open to accepting LGBT+ people before meeting them because they don’t fear the myths or may even be drawn to them.

The character Eggs also felt like an allegory for being bi, where he’s not quite human (straight) or boxtroll (gay), but identifies with the boxtrolls nonetheless because they’re who he can relate to more. Winnie also felt like representation of allies who might be more accepting for… OTHER… reasons

I also more-so thought of the movie as an allegory for being gay, as the boxtrolls themselves always reminded me of queer spaces, with many of them following common queer archetypes that I’ve seen in many LGBT+ spaces irl.

While it can be seen as transphobic/homophobic through a modern lens, I’m sure that the joke was less about a man wearing drag and more about how people wouldn’t know it was him; especially considering that Laika already had some amazing LGBT+ rep in the form of Mitch from ParaNorman.

I mean, one of Grindr’s largest demographics are republican men, so it can’t be that inaccurate lmao

Jokes aside, I’m sure that they were merely playing with the trope of the paper-thin disguise, making Snatcher wear drag because it added comedic contrast.

To those who are confused, the extra shading was added a few months after the original. I initially tried a “cell shaded” look that didn’t feel quite right.

I mean the most recent of my artworks has taken me literal weeks and still isn’t even halfway finished! What’s worse is that it’s one of the first in a collection that I plan to release all at once.

Think of my upload schedule like an occasional art gallery rather than individual pieces.

Plus, I mainly just use these websites to look at what’s going on with my favorite artists, not to gain some kind of online following. That ship sailed a long time ago for me.

Plus, after posting much less on the internet, I’ve grown to be a much happier person. Back in 2020, I was almost always on Twitter or Reddit, which rotted my brain to a point where I’m still recovering. Nowadays, I’m able to do larger projects and feel more satisfied from the final products.

The issue is that I’ve started to do my work in batches for visual consistency, and most of what I’ve done is either for college or for projects that will take years to finish. Unfortunately, my workflow is just not built for social media and I’ll probably post less to be completely honest.
