The #Minoan Palace of #Knossos has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list - but only the palace site. The palace sits within a 70 ha ancient city, and @britschoolathens.bsky.social will be investigating it for at least the next 5 years. #archaeology #AncientBlueSky ๐บ

07.07.2025 15:25 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Certainly encouraging public engagement in historical research, yet this @theguardian.com opinion piece, again, perpetuates an outdated notion:
๐บ #Archaeology is *not* about objects. Just digging up old stuff is of little help in understanding "the past" if contextual information is abandoned.
If you have another way of hearing about conferences, etc., then stay away. I've been subscribed for 20 years and often think it's not worth the energy
07.07.2025 14:00 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I am flabbergasted. I hope you know you are much admired for your unrelenting efforts to keep the spotlight on Gaza and foregrounding Palestinian voices. Classics is a big tent, and we shouldnโt all agree, but surely we donโt have to be absolutely massive bellends about disagreements
05.07.2025 11:52 โ ๐ 14 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0It can be genuinely useful to have a single place for conference announcements etc, but the shitshow component often makes me wonder if itโs worth it
05.07.2025 11:43 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Just the usual collection of asshats and ostriches trying to claim that archaeology and classics shouldnโt be engaged with Palestine or the unfolding horrors
05.07.2025 10:53 โ ๐ 9 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0It was set up (I think) and is loosely moderated by Nick Lowe at Royal
Holloway. He normally steps in after a few reply-alls and tells all sides to take it elsewhere
"This is a Classicists List not a political one."
A field of study is doomed when it surrenders its claim to be relevant to the real world, to how we live our lives in relation to other human beings, & cultivate mutual understanding. Isn't that the very point of the humanities?
