The NIH budget will INCREASE by $400 million — not slashed by 40%, as Trump proposed — according to a proposal by Senate appropriators, says Sen Murray.
"Some have asked if there will even be an NIH by [2029]. The commmittee's resounding message is yes—Congress has your back", she says.
So, while paying off my student loans should be a thrilling day, it isn't. I am so angry and so sad about the lack of prospects and pathways that were the entire purpose of the NIH Loan Repayment Program.

16.07.2025 14:40 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0It is surreal to write this, as I watch the path for early career researchers be systematically dismantled. I am heartbroken (and angered!) by what promises to be an incalculable loss for early career scientists, but more importantly for the world.
16.07.2025 14:40 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0It's strange, as of today my student loans are officially paid off. This is entirely thanks to the NIH Loan Repayment Program -- an incredible mechanism to help early career scientists stay in publicly funded biomedical research. I am so grateful have received these awards. they were life changing.

At first, NIH told me its contracts with SN were active and that they help “advance scientific discovery”.
Hours later, HHS said the opposite: "Precious taxpayer dollars should not be used on unused subscriptions to junk science.”

Our study, building/piloting an automated safety planing service with & for young people experiencing suicidal thoughts & behaviors will run out of money.

It's no secret that this admin has been awful & vindictive to the LGBTQ+ community, but officially removing the Trevor Project from the 988 infrastructure is a new low.
You can still reach the Trevor proj. directly (call: 1-866-488-7386; text: 678-678).
There is no excuse for this abuse.
THIS IS IT! THIS IS HUGE!!

Judge Young rules that the NIH grant terminations at issue in these cases are illegal and therefore vacated. BOOM!
It's 2p here in Boston, and we're back on the record in the NIH grant terminations case.
It's possible Judge Young could issue some sort of ruling here in the next few minutes, or he could provide more context for case management going forward.
Stay tuned.

Funding freeze at Northwestern from Emma Mairson at
grant-watch.us. Data from USAspending. Normally, ~$70 M per month. Now, bupkis.
Northwestern is keeping research moving and must be spending ~$40 M per month. Clearly not sustainable for too long.

The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.
It is impossible to make a “deal” with people who lie, move the goalposts, and explicitly state their intent to bring universities “to their knees”.
The “deal” that Americans have with each other is called the US Constitution.
We need THAT deal to be enforced. We do not need other “deals“.
I urge everyone to read Unbreaking’s new page on everything the govt is doing to destroy & diminish medical research funding.
It’s the best thing I’ve read on this topic: @lizneeley.bsky.social & co have such done an incredible job.
