i've been playing smt 3 nocturne (featuring dante from devil may cry) and admire how charmingly 2003 it is? i also am surprised how well it holds up despite missing modern features, and i keep getting attached to my demons and going 'there goes my boy!' as they crit something to death for me

what a game. I've never beaten a FromSoftware game before, but this one's been a blast. Technically I still have an ending left but I'm taking a break after no-lifeing the first two.

tldr i love this game. the gameplay is great, yeah, but i actually really dug the story and how it's told through faceless people who nonetheless feel entirely realized solely through combat missions and briefings. i will remember these characters for a very long time.

people in this game are also defined by their connections and relations, which i haven't heard many talk about. it's a theme that feels intentional, given how that's what the whole coral dilemma is about, but also just... making that choice will make sure you are not alone, for good and ill.

armored core 6 is about how you are your own person and have to make your own choices - fence sitters make neither enemies nor friends. and once you make that choice, you can't take it back. it's been made! you just gotta live with the consequences.

played enough of armored core 6 (two endings) over the past week to firmly say that this game has the right vibes. i was thinking also about how it's often connected to the mechsploitation movement but the two feel different?

i like geats and zeztz enough on their own merits but now that you mention that i think i see see what you're talking about? though i did think the ace-keiwa framing reminded me of kabuto which is also a little less 'child show' than normal i guess

now longing for a tokusatsu queer literature boom (unless that exists???) in a similar vein except keeping the general toei tokusatsu toneband. i want girls in armor having fist fights and then making out after the fist fight while exploring an ever-hopeful relationship with their own personhood

but instead feels like a natural, integral, and earned part of the story, not just pandering? idk

finally we've got drive, where the lead is def straight but the secondaries are running their own enemies-to-lovers romance to the side of this mega man x game, to the point they hit harder than the explicitly canon het romance. i wonder if it's that the gay subtext doesn't feel extraneous?

then we've got build, where one of the lead guys has a girlfriend who is written off within two episodes and barely affects the plot or his motivations and instead forms a real connection with the lead, but also the show still has a deep plot and heavy themes (which i haven't entirely absorbed)

there's something about tokusatsu and queerness that i can't put my finger on but definitely keeps pulling me in. like, kamen rider kuuga is a show about how proximity to violence affects and warps you but it's also a show about how these two dudes find a lasting bond to the point it's homoerotic
