Pepper balls hurt and act as pepper spray. They're not very accurate, so you'll probably get hit during a spray-n-pray barrage. Wear long sleeves, hat, gloves, and jeans. Guys, wear an athletic cup. Get a gas mask with eye protection (pic). Be prepared, be safe, help others.

When it happens - and it WILL happen - it will be quick. Much faster than you can react. It takes hours/days/weeks to set up dominoes that fall in seconds. All you can do is be prepared and hope to survive it, but it's coming.
