It doesn't make for great reporting either. It's just a bunch of numbers that finish with the conclusion that many houses and pieces of infrastructure have technically become uninsurable due to climate change. All “we” can do is wait for the next disaster to strike and to report on.

And yes, this *is* predictable. Insurance companies have these scenarios mapped out and know both the probabilities and potential damage. They're just not publishing them. And politicians, by and large, don't want to hear about it anyway.

Make no mistake, people do survive in war economies. But in some ways, for some people, this non-finality of suffering might turn out to be much worse than a “true Doomsday”. It's just going to be a succession of mini-Doomsdays, unhoming and displacing chunks of population at a time.

The closest I can imagine for our future is some kind of war economy, where material wealth is destroyed at a higher rate than it can be rebuilt. Except it would be a war economy for decades upon decades, because you can can't sign a peace treaty with the climate (atmosphere).

The big, untouchable, question then becomes: What about the underlying mortgages? Aren't the banks and therefor the entire financial system terribly exposed? And sure, if, no... *when* these scenario's happen, we can pile on government debt, but that's not exactly a stable strategy, is it?

In contrast with the situation in the US described in the article, our insurance companies therefor have limited their financial exposure to climate change. They won't necessarily go bankrupt, but that won't help much, because the homeowners still lose everything.

Directly on our horizon is exactly the same issue: Countless homes are only insured *in theory* against climate-related disasters (in the EU, flooding is het big thing). In reality however the total payout per “single disaster” is capped, well below the estimates for certain likely scenarios.

Tytgat had beter de omwonenden van 3M eens gewaarschuwd over wat voor PFAS waarden hij onder ogen kreeg, ipv gefabriceerde bodemnormen voor BAM/Lantis af te stempelen.

(Maar bon, om de één of andere reden is het de enige toxicoloog waar media bij terecht kunnen.)

(En toegegeven, het heeft zeer lang geduurd voor ik dat spelletje doorhad.)

In Vlaanderen is het meest praktische effect daarvan vooral zichtbaar in praatprogramma's. “Activisten” worden daar zo goed als nooit uitgenodigd, of op z'n best als uitzonderlijk curiosum. De zwarte schapen van de familie, de “relschoppers”.

”Activist” is, met andere woorden, een “wij vs zij” woord: Het zet wie die titel krijgt automatisch aan de andere kant van een imaginaire lijn, buiten het “wij” clubje. Het is een vrij onsubtiel signaal om aan sociale uitsluiting te doen.

Maar in (Vlaamse) journalistieke kringen krijgt het woord “activist” een andere betekenis. Het is een soort van scheldwoord voor eender wie een betere maatschappij denkt te willen nastreven die niet ofwel de gevestigde orde bestendigt (zoals Noels) of gebaseerd is op onderdrukking (zoals DVL).

Dat Geert Noels als “econoom” wordt benoemd in zijn vele opinies, zegt veel over de impliciete betekenis die redacties aan het woord “activist” geven.

Uiteraard zijn dit “buitenparlementaire activiteiten die als doel hebben politieke en/of maatschappelijke verandering te brengen”.

Interne documenten onthullen hoe EU-wetgeving werd afgezwakt, waardoor veel Europeanen worden blootgesteld aan mogelijke gezondheidsrisico's.
