I feel like office work is like different games of cards. Being an IC is like blackjack, but leading is like poker.

In blackjack, I just have to focus on myself and the end goal. For poker, I have to know the end goal, and know other people (and their skill set) as well.

That looks like a hidden bug that'd be impossible to find!

Would a proper way to implement this be to pass in "i" as a parameter into the goroutine?

Nobody seemed to care about maintainability, documentation, or any sort of coding style at all.

"You got it to work one time? Great! LGTM merge it to main."

I was asked by my dept's executive leadership to eval an internal tool to see if it was ok for teams I supported, just because one of our customers liked it.

The only issue? While it was developed for 10 years already by very experienced devs, it was the biggest piece of hot garbage I've ever seen.

The way a story about a software's utility is more important than its actual utility.

I like that languages like Go also provide a way to do tests and code coverage built in makes me so happy! I don't have to think about matching dependencies just to run tests/generate code coverage

...and having unit/regression tests is saving me so much time and headache!

I don't have to guess if my function works like I designed, my tests will tell me!

I've been writing a side utility for data processing for my own personal use for the past 4 years, and I'm finally getting around to doing some general house cleaning (doc comments are correct, minimizing unnecessary redeclarations/initialization of variables or excessive function calls in loops...)

Unit tests and regression tests are the greatest!

It might just be the culture of the folks I work with, or just the general lack of funding, but it seems like hardly anyone I work with gives a damn about writing proper unit/regression tests, allowing bugs to constantly resurface.

If anyone is hiring or knows someone who's hiring, I have experience in general automation, data processing, and binary data packing/unpacking, but I am open to pivoting into cybersecurity, DevOps, and/or web development.

On the job hunt for a software role!

I'm mainly focused on desktop and embedded applications, using C/C++, Python, Go, and command line scripting. I'm gaining familiarity with Rust and C#, and have some very basics of HTML/CSS/JavaScript.

My coworker unironically complained for an hour about why a software, which requires specific software drivers, can't simply be moved to another computer without said drivers.

He works in tech.

His politics don't need to be stated for everyone to know how he voted.

It's pretty neat that Kenneth Branagh has big box film credits under his name after Harry Potter.

Longshot, but has anyone ever done a thing by connecting an Android phone to Linux Mint, and using Android as a speaker for the PC over Bluetooth?

I'm able to connect via Bluetooth, but I dunno how to set my phone as a "speaker" to forward sound from my PC to it

Many times, I like reading the Wikipedia summaries of films over watching them, but some movies I know exactly what yet I still watch it for the way it tells the story, not just the story itself.

It was dark, and even though my college town was relatively safe, I walked her back to her house carrying her basket of food back for her. I forget if I got her name, but it's long forgotten now.

I wonder how she's doing now?

I saw a reddit post asking about a one time encounter memory with a stranger you've never met again, and some answers reminded me of when I was in college, taking the campus bus back to my dorms. I saw an obviously pregnant woman with a laundry basket full of groceries, getting off a couple... 1/2

Every time I see a post by Kelsey Hightower, I'm reminded of that one time they were in a podcast and kept pronouncing "library" as "libary" 😬
