RETHINK-GSC researcher Aleksandra Parteka, who is a professor of economics at the Gdańsk University of Technology and the host of the workshop, is gesturing while presenting her research on funding structures and university patenting.

Agnes Kügler, a RETHINK-GSC researcher and a senior economist at the WIFO, points to the formula used in her latest research on the effects of patent litigation and trade, which is displayed on the screen.

More worryingly, major tariff changes have been enacted without congressional debate — thanks to a decades-long shift of power to the presidency.

When politics deteriorates and economics is oversimplified, policy can take radical turns with long-term global implications.

In short, it's an optimisation formula built on shaky ground.

Critics argue that the assumptions are extreme — especially ignoring supply chains & retaliation risks. 4/

The model assumes:

🔹 Exports are unaffected by tariffs
🔹 Trade balances are independent from country-by-country
🔹 Identical behaviour for all goods and nations
