visited the Museum of Science this afternoon, unknowingly on the opening day of their brand new bathroom facilities, which have got to be the best public bathroom I’ve ever seen. Completely gender neutral, full rooms for each toilet, free feminine products, and hand dryer or paper towels. Amazing!

Yep and this is an actual proper heat pump too, not just an air conditioner with “supplemental heat” which is a fancy term for a 1500w resistive heating element… there’s a lot of those on the market.

@techconnectify.bsky.social this is right up your alley and might be worth a video. This is a GE AWGP08WWF and this is one of the VERY few window heat pumps just starting to enter the market, intending to be an affordable and easy to install alternative to mini splits, esp for apartment dwellers.

Oh and for those wondering, near-future project is to build a small lean-to to keep this from being buried in snow as normally you don't mount one this low to the ground.

Why would I install an air conditioner in a basement window in late October? This is no ordinary air conditioner as it actually is also a heat pump, and I am very excited to be able to heat my basement computer room way more efficiently than the resistive heat I used for years...

yeah, Apple does not have nearly as much of a history of forcing something on you and then telling you to deal with it. They still believe in choice. it’s there if you want it, you can shut it off if you don’t want it.

I jumped ship in March and bought a Mac, and I’m not going back unless Apple does this shit as well

Heh thanks, it's how I save some height in that stereo cabinet, though you have to be careful with a playing record not to make it skip. I usually load, slide in, then hit the auto start but some records don't have the "leader" groove cut so I can't do that with those.

Yeah, that makes sense. Social statuses are something our brains aren’t wired to do so it’s another way we have to adapt to interfacing with NT individuals.

On the other hand i’ve had many NT people get bent out of shape when I decline an invitation, so it’s like what the hell people…..

But also yes when you think you’ve fucked up and have no idea how and the other person won’t tell you, it’s VERY stressful for us.

They won’t tell you because again afraid of hurting feelings but it’s the complete opposite for autistic people.

I’ve noticed NT people prefer to not outright decline out of fear of hurting feelings and instead make excuses or give the runaround.

I’d prefer if they’d just decline because in my logic driven mind it’s a response to a boolean variable. Yes or no. Don’t give me maybe when it’s really no.

yeah, a lot of us can spot it, but I’ve seen a lot of cases where they don’t realize what’s happening until it’s too late.

And also, yes, I’ve experienced the same thing before with ghosting like that.

I’ve seen many cases of autistic people meeting someone who wants to be their friend, but they don’t realize that person wants to take advantage of them somehow, and then after that person has used them, they get thrown out like yesterday’s news. .. this practice is so disrespectful. Ugh

And lastly some misc stuff:
Leich PBX, MIT "RotoStrowBar" which was a weird little switch built by a group of MIT students using rotary, step by step, and crossbar selectors, another SxS PBX from kennebec pulp & paper, a 555 switchboard, and a very old flag drop switchboard from Fort Kent, ME.

In storage they have a mostly complete SxS central office from the town of Clinton, ME, an Ericsson AGF500, and many other future exhibits that they sadly don't have space for yet.

North Electric CX-100, formerly of Island Telephone, which was at the time the country's smallest independent telco. The entire central office was moved to the museum grounds from Frenchboro, ME after he sold the company.

Heard these sounds this past weekend at Maine's Telephone Museum, the only other place in the US with a working #5 crossbar. Remarkable machine, glad that 2 of them got preserved.

Weird electrical device that feels rather out of place, but...

American influence on Saudi Arabia led to them adopting US electrical standards. At one point they decided to align with the rest of Europe and chose British plugs. These were created to allow easy retrofits. Made by Leviton.
