I have to manage a few people where I work and I always tell them that I'd rather they do good work instead of a lot of work. Vacations and time to rest are important too. At the end of the day, even if you love the job, it isn't worth your health.

You did the right thing. Working with leadership to discuss bandwidth, especially around extra work without extra compensation, is an important part of time and growth management. And if they have an issue, that's where HR comes in lol
