Night #16: The Terror (1963). A Roger Corman film. This may be where Jack Nicholson got the idea to highlight/check off his lines on a script. Because in the fantastic documentary on Kubrick's The Shining, Jack mentions how he saw Boris Karloff do this on set. Best BTS movie doc ever IMO. #31DoNXVII

Night #15: In the Mouth of Madness (1995). John Carpenter's '90s run is underrated and this Lovecraftian film is a fine example of that. Apocalyptic, entertaining, chaotic and meta to the max. Plus Sam Neill always delivers when in his maniacal horror element. #31DoNXVII

Night #14: Session 9 (2001). One of the first studio films captured entirely on digital video at 24 frames/sec. Some visual references to The Shining (1980) in the introductory scenes of the abandoned (and very real) insane asylum. FYI this chilling film kicked off my 2002 Halloween party #31DoNXVII

Night #13: Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies (1999). "As you wish." The villainous Wishmaster character deserves his flowers. Plays by a set of clearly defined rules and preys on the greedy desires of humanity. Hilarious sequel to Pt. I which I enjoyed in Shocktober 2024. RIP Tommy Lister Jr. #31DoNXVII

Night #12: Night Watch (1973). Turns out that this is the only horror/thriller film which stars Elizabeth Taylor. Solid cast unravels the mystery plot of what very much feels like something that Hammer Film Productions would've released at the time. Atmospheric thunder and lightning FTW. #31DoNXVII

Night #11: The Boogeyman (2023). Grief as a nocturnal monster. Decent studio horror with some creepy moments. I also prefer things to be constantly dim/dark so I understand not turning on any lights (simple solution in this case). Unrelated but marginally better than The Boogey Man (1980) #31DoNXVII

Night #10: Shadow of a Doubt (1991). Hard to top a Hitchcock classic, but this '90s remake does a swell job of closely replicating scenes from the original while setting an alternate tone. Mark Harmon makes his portrayal of Uncle Charlie his own. Tippi Hedren cameo was also a nice touch. #31DoNXVII

Night #9: Shadow of a Doubt (1943). Hitchcock's personal fave out of the master's legendary filmography. Terror literally hits home via Unc Chuck (played to perfection by Joseph Cotten). Suspenseful plot centred around the close uncle/niece dynamic brought emotional weight to the mystery. #31DoNXVII

Night #8: Moon of the Wolf (1972). Made-for-TV goodness about a werewolf terrorizing the citizens of a small Louisiana town. The well-rounded cast carries a decent plot that is perfectly suitable viewing for lycanthrope season. #31DoNXVII

Night #7: Dead of Night (1974). Bob Clark's thought-provoking take on vampirism through the lens of Vietnam war veterans. Excellent make-up effects by Tom Savini who himself served in Vietnam. An effective collaboration between two masters of their craft. #31DoNXVII

Night #6: Messiah of Evil (1975). A unique cinematic trip that sets a cohesively eerie, surreal tone throughout and features some of the most disciplined, methodical "zombies" ever portrayed. Kind of lost the plot near the end but still dug it overall (movie theatre scene was a highlight) #31DoNXVII

Night #5: Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998). Arguably the second best entry in the deadly flying sphere franchise (although haven't seen Pt. V yet). Takes things back to the essence in two ways: the origin story of the Tall Man and the clever usage of deleted scenes from the first film. #31DoNXVII

Night #4: Dark Tower (1987). Haunted house concept but in a skyscraper instead. Started off interestingly enough but ultimately didn't amount to much in the end as the plot execution and payoff left much to be desired. Cool movie poster though. #31DoNXVII

EVIL JUDGMENT (1984): At last some Canuxploitation in this year's viewings. This was a fun discovery, released on blu-ray by @vinsyn.bsky.social. A fun mix of slasher and giallo influences, shot in Montreal on a small budget. Right up my alley. #HHype2025 Pt VIII
