Scotland risks 'wholesale loss' of heritage as archaeology cuts leave numbers at 'bare minimum'
Archaeologists working for local authorities are charged with the protection of 90 per cent of Scotlandβs historical and archaeological sites - but numbers of staff continue to fall.
Article out today on the risk to heritage as local authority staff see numbers drop to a bare minimum. Despite a loss of staff from 33 in 2005 to just 19, with the risk of further cuts in the future but they are responsible for roughly 90% of heritage in Scotland. tinyurl.com/hsbfwyb6

This is fascinating, if a little gruesome. Makes me think that Needham's fission horizon and integration of the Neo-EBA parallel communities wasn't a peaceful process. Looking forward to seeing more of the genetics!

βSomething horribleβ: Somerset pit reveals bronze age cannibalism
Oxford analysis shows evidence of bloody massacre, with hand and feet bones chewed by human molars
πΊ Cannibalism is incredibly tricky to interpret, and I don't think available evidence here = single event "massacre". Dating could span generations, & the fact cannibalism in British BA isn't common elsewhere doesn't imply *this* case is from a violent conflict.

Bronze Age ploughing was performed with the ard, consisting of a share, stilt, draft-pole & yoke. This was used to cross-plough at right angles to break up the soil & remove weeds.
